memory leak?

so i'm still using 5.7b 3444 without hacks. basically, I have not closed winamp or turned off my computer yet, and luckily haven't had a crash or needed to restart.

however, the ram usage grows everyday. its now around 1.2 gig. I figure artwork scrolling, switching views, etc, has some effect, but it grows, slowly, even when not being used.

is this a memory leak? and is there anything I can do to help identify it so it can be plugged? I do think winamp should be better at releasing RAM and I have a feeling its artwork related, since I know we've identified that before, but I just want to be sure its not something else as well?

it'd be due to the Cloud logging (and specifically the preferences tab) aspect which have been clearly said they leak memory over long periods of usage.

and with the artwork, all i will say is i have looked into it recently and unless there is an issue / failing due to something else (even from OS caching being accounted in the process usage), the artwork is releasing the cached instance of the memory when the views showing it are closed.

there are a few things which can be altered to drop the loaded art db after a period of inactivity (as it's only initially loaded if needed) but that needs time to do. either way this is not open to more speculation, etc as to what is / isn't going on and nothing else needs to be said on the matter.

well, I don't dispute that, I just didn't get the memo. I didn't know if it was known and/or unique to me, ergo the feedback. if there is anything I can do to provide info, i'm happy to do so.

it was mentioned in the 5.7 thread and the logging was only meant as a temporary debugging feature so it just keeping adding to an in-memory allocated list was deemed acceptable. that feature will be removed at some stage when it is no longer applicable - until that time, leaving Winamp running with Cloud will keep eating up more memory over time. other than disabling the Cloud components and running as a v5.65 install, there is nothing that needs to be done or can be done currently.

hmmm, does this happen even when logging is NOT enabled and not checked in the prefs? I go to prefs > ML > CL > Logging tab and its all unchecked.

if so, that would explain it. if not, then...?

btw, I have a number of totally normal mp3s and FLACs and so on showing up in the incompatible files list, ~ 700 or so. haven't had that before.

there is still the activity logging in the list section lower down on the preferences page - that is what is using the in-process memory and is what is leaking.

the options above it on that page relate only to the storing of server responses in Cloud\logs folder and they do not leak memory.

ah, got it, where it says "Pulling" ...thx for the explanation.

any idea as to why I have the incompatible files listing? i'm pretty sure previously these files worked ok, the mp3s anyway.

probably the bad taste filter. you can remove them from the ignore list and try a re-scan to see what happens with them (sometimes failed / interrupted processing can kick a file into that state).

just because I'm British doesn't mean I have to blindly like everything done by them. I like some stuff but then other things they did aren't that great imho. which is what can be said about any other band. and there's nothing wrong with some katy perry every now and then. either way, each to their own.

madness!

I trust you realize that was tongue in cheek while at the same time completely serious.

so anyway, I got the list down from 700 to around 100. i'm doing some things to see if I can work out these stragglers. I might have a few interesting files that in theory should work, but don't. i'll report back later.
