Ability to designate whether Auto-Tag writes to ID3v1 and/or ID3v2 tags

With the release of Winamp v5.5 BETA, Auto-Tag functionality was added to the
Basic Info tab of the new File Info window. If the Auto-Tag results are accepted,
they are currently saved to BOTH the ID3v1 AND ID3v2 tags.
Problem is, on my own, I would usually only populate the ID3v2 tags.

Might I request the ability be added (or plugin created) ...
to control whether the Auto-Tag results are saved to the
ID3v1 tag, the ID3v2 tag, OR BOTH the ID3v1 & ID3v2 tags
.

What I am suggesting is a preferences option, which would allow a user to designate which tags are populated when accepting Auto-Tag results each and every time
Auto-Tag is used (thus promoting a consistency in data population - either the tag is always used or the tag is never used).

Thanks for your consideration.

Note:
  • I realize that one can UNCHECK the "Include ID3v1 tag in file" (on the ID3v1 tab) before accepting the Auto-Tag results ... thus preventing the population of the ID3v1 tag. However, this step is repetitive, and it would be time saving to have
a configurable option to control this behavior.

Both Auto-Tag and ml_autotag respect in_mp3 settings

So, if you uncheck 'Write ID3v1' in in_mp3 config, then auto-tag won't write to ID3v1

Configuring in_mp3.dll to designate whether Auto-Tag writes to ID3v1 and/or ID3v2 tag

Thank you DJ Egg! I didn't know those settings/options were there.

For those less familiar with what Egg pointed me to.
Go to Winamp Preferences > Plug-ins > Input
and configure "Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder" (in_mp3.dll).

To achieve my goal of NOT writing to the ID3v1 tag,
I needed to uncheck the corresponding options:

Note that when you use Auto-Tag, the ID2v1 tab will still be populated as such:

However, rest assured that upon accepting the Auto-Tag results, the ID3v1 tag
will NOT be saved. I realize that this is slightly counterintuitive, but it does work!

Also note ... that configuring in_mp3.dll in the above manner will affect the behavior
of "Edit selected items..." (which was also bugging me by writing to both tags).

Re: Configuring in_mp3.dll to designate whether Auto-Tag writes to ID3v1 and/or ID3v2 tag

Only one hick-up in using the in_mp3.dll options to designate whether
Auto-Tag and "Edit selected items..." writes to ID3v1 and/or ID3v2 tag.

Given the in_mp3.dll options I unchecked in the screenshot above, if you get an MP3 that already has an ID3v1 tag, you will NOT be able to remove it without re-checking the options in in_mp3.dll.

DJ Egg - is there any way to setup the options to enable removal of an ID3v1 tag
while still preventing Auto-Tag and/or "Edit selected items..." from creating them?

Hi everyone - thanks for this thread. Now, I know what I need to do for proper AutoTagging on Winamp 5. Winamp's partnership with Gracenote is the best! FreeDB has too much inaccurate data to make it a reliable service.

JP - I understand your situation because I am dealing with exactly same situation with ID3v1 tags remaining in the MP3 file. I've been playing with MP3TAG (freeware) and you can have it remove the ID3v1 tags in batch. I suggest you their "extend tag" feature first to move any ID3v1 tags that to ID3v2 before removing the ID3v1 tags.

Anyway to remove ID3v1 tags:

1) Set your tools, options to a) Read all ID3v1 and b) Remove all ID3v1 tags (in red box below)

2) Import your MP3 collection
3) Select your MP3(s) you want to remove the tags from (you can sort by tag column)
4) File, Remove tag will remove the ID3v1 tags from the MP3 files you selected

Even if "Nullsoft MPEG Audio Decoder" ID3v1 checkboxes are off, AutoTag will still fill in the form fields for ID3v1. That data just won't be saved when I click OK. I'd prefer the ID3v1 form fields not being filled in during AutoTag, but I can live with it if Winamp doesn't address this.
