GoldenSphynx.TK

http://www.goldensphynx.tk

I've gotten around to designing myself a site, and I'm still working on the content, but it seems a little too "empty", and I'm at a loss for ideas.

Also, anyone that wants to trade buttons(88x31, I believe) post your info here. I'll have a button made for my site shortly.

I like the design, but the main header seems to be a bit too big. It looks good, but to me it seems like just a splash page with some content.

The table with the content should be wider IMHO, and it needs something down the bottom to break up the large see of grey (at 1600x1200+ it just doesnt look right).

Anywho, if you want to swap links with me you can. Link buttons are here: http://www.atmodigitaldesign.com/links2.htm

How about some iframe scrollers?
I like the design, as for content may I suggest a shoutbox/poll/link table on the sides?

I guess I'll make another graphic for the bottom, Atmo. I myself thought it was a bit too empty, just wasn't sure if adding something else might over do it. In terms of pixels, how wide would you say the iframe should be?

There are scrollers underneath the iframe(those arrows), hammerhead. I'll try out a shoutbox to see how it fits in. Know any good free ones?

I'd make the iframe about as wide as the header: 716 pixels.

Down the bottom you could put some copyright text, just to break up the grey.

Those scrollers scroll awfully slow. I'd boost the speed if I was you, not many people may want to sit around for 5 mintes while it scrolls.
Other than that, looks pretty good.

I'd trade buttons with you, but I haven't gotten around to making my links page yet. It might take a couple years. But you can just take my button if you want, and I'll come back to you if I ever get to working on my links page.

Nice site. I like those arrows. But I agree that the scrollers could be faster.

Anyway, I like to collect 88x31 links. Check out mine:
http://links.flatmatt.com/#linkme
and you can choose any one you want. Though I have to admit I hate the animated steel one and should probably delete it.

Edit: The steel button's gone. It's been replaced with a (slightly crazier) Construction Paper Winter-themed button.

Nice site. Love the trendwhoreishness of it. It's carried out well without selling your soul too much. I'm not a great fan of DHTML scrollers myself -- the speed seems to vary depending on which browser -- but I don't think IFRAMEs are the answer -- are they crossbrowser? Personally I would just have it all in one page but if you want it how it is I would stick with the DHTML scroller. If you could you should modify the JavaScript to recognise down arrow/up arrow/page down/page up but that's not necessary and I guess it's an off-the-shelf script.

Nice site! I like the header. May I suggest a something like gray sheet metal or metallic background? Also, don't forget to add Winamp and Winamp Forums to your list of links.

Regardless of how anyone else feels about your site, the most import thing it that MR_007 likes it. Where can you get better approval that that?

When I do that, the iframe looks really empty. I'm gonna try and fill up the space with something. I just don't know what that something is right now.

skinme!, you are correct to assume it's an "off-the-shelf script". IFRAMES can only be viewed with IE 4+ and Netscape 6+, BTW. I'll put a disclaimer on the loading page, something along the lines of "Best viewed with..."

JohnnyMac, those links you suggested are now up. I chose BlueBalls' button for Skin Love because I thought it was really cool. As for the background, I don't know how it would look, so I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.

That's a nice site design. It is a tad empty, as you said. My suggestion is to add more gold, and a Sphynx or two. Hahaha. Seriously, there's no gold, and no sphynxes. That's false advertising. Ah, I'm just joking around. It's a good design, I hope you come up with some good space-filler.

[edit] I set up a fading grid on both sides of the page, which I think looks really nice. Is it enough to make the page look not so empty?

It doesn't. Does it?

I think you should add padding to your light grey box for the content so that when you scroll it doesn't go right to the edge. I assume the DHTML would allow you to add padding: 5px to the stylesheet for the box?

Yes, the grid stops if you scroll down on the frame part of the page. Also, your site is rather unusable when I switch to 800x600. You may want to think about making it more usable at other resolutions.

Your grid is a table background. This table is set to height="100%", which, AFAIK, if the page is longer than the window height means 100% = window height not page length. You shouldn't do the background like that anyway. Also, you have massive gifs which are the same colour as the background (15,13, and something). What is the point of these? Did you use a program to generate HTML from slicing up an image?

Yep, I used ImageReady to generate tables for me. I guess I could just get rid of them, and keep the table cells the same size. How would you suggest for me to put the grids on the sides? That was the only way I could think of.

That is quite a difficult one. What I think I would do is create a DIV in which the whole page resided like this:
code:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>GoldenSphynx.TK ::: version 1.0</TITLE>
<style type="text/css">
<!--

body { background: #404040 url('left-border.gif') left top repeat-x; }
#rightborder { background: #404040 url('right-border.gif') right top repeat-x;
width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; }

-->
</style>
</HEAD>
<BODY BGCOLOR=#404040 LEFTMARGIN=0 TOPMARGIN=0 MARGINWIDTH=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0 RIGHTMARGIN=0>
<div id="rightborder">

<!-- PUT THE REST OF YOUR CODE IN HERE -->

</div>
</body>
</html>

Replace red bits with correct img names. This should create a DIV which takes up 100% space in the site to attach the right border to with the left border on the BODY tag.

Yeah, you're titlebar's all weird-looking. Oh, wait, that's XP.

Ummm, maybe nix the grid. Or, actually, just use a solid grid, and it'll just stop at the grey area. Nah, that's probably a bad idea.
