Solid Winamp Hardware???

I'm not a new user to winamp, acutaly purchased it 4 years ago for the introductory $10, the first software I purchased online EVER. Anyway, I've been using it since then and I love it, it's the only thing I use to play MP3's and streaming audio.

now that that's out of the way, Have you guys ever thought of putting your dam cool software into a hardware unit??

Maybe a cd player for my car, with a wireless net connection to shoutcast?? 2 gig hardrive, and cd player??

I can't be the only one to think of this.. I mean your software has been kick ass since the beginning, if you actualy made a hardware player, I'm sure millions would purchase. I would... just don't build a crappy one!!!

Winamp was shareware many many moons ago.

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty

I remember something like this being brought up long ago. Hell, I'd buy a Winamp CDPlayer, just because it'd have a winamp logo on it. Not a bad idea, how AOL/Nullsoft feels about it is another story(because I don't know ).

No, Really,
Nullsoft could get into this... it could be an internal black box kind of thing and someone could build the interface to match one of the many thousand interface designs available.. could even make it wireless, and stick it to the center of the stearing wheel.

Nullsoft could hold a contest and restrict it to college students. charge 50 bucks for an entrance fee. Then, have students design, and build a unit, Nulsoft could test the units, and choose a handfull of finalists. Then Winamp fans could choos the overall winner. The winner or winning team could get a grant for tuition or housing and a production unit installed on there vehical.

If they went with a wireless black box design this could go on after that. other contests could be to create new interfaces, just like the skins we drool over now.

Anyway, if anyone is remotely serious about this(not saying that anyone who has thus far responded isn't) let me know, lets see where this goes.

Dave Out.

I'd love to see Winamp make a hardware mp3/ogg player, because nobody else will <_<

first i was thinking it would be slow ass like on pc, but then i was thinking the screen resolution would be like 320x240 or something; maybe smaller.

so that would PWN.

You would need to build a whole computer first and a monitor and touch screen controls. push button controls me be adapted to do this.

one guy used a small moboard a small lcd touch screen and put winamp in his cars dashboard. there was a thread about this but the links have long been lost.

the problem with using winamp as a hardware player is that it'd either have to be pretty much entirely recoded, or you'd have to put windows on the little portable box (if that's still the idea being bandied about).

would be good, though.

ok,,, I guess I'm not being as explicitly detailed as you all would like, but let me specify, in 1996, wow yes my freshman year at purdue university I purchased shareware titled "winamp" because it was that kick ass then. I still say it's kick ass, but don't sit at my puter 24/7. It would be nice to have a "mountable", In dash, hardware unit, that was mass produced by nullsoft, and looked and functioned amazingly just like the stock winamp skin.

All the other stuff is icing on the cake, but basicaly what would be perfect is what is described above. It doesn't require the wondows platform, or even a touch screen so long as it resembles and works without flaw like the software we so diligently talk about in these more than intelectual forums.

Let me just say you guys are great... Keep it comming..

If you need some visuals let me know..

yes, how dare he try to support a product which is currently free, and which kicks ass. What we shoudl be doing is trying to get into teh nullsoft offices and steal shit.

*cough* asshole *cough*

and anyway, in the early days (as stated) winamp was shaerware (well, you coudl register and just not pay, but you paid if you were nice)

700 dollars is hella cheap for a unit with full touch screen lcd.

decent in car dvd costs 1000 ish. you are pretty much putting a whole computer in your car with a custom screen so its gonna cost extra. you have to be extra l33tish to pull something like that off.

Put a dvd rom under the screen with a flip down motor on the screen and watch DVD's in the dash like that. that would be hella sweet.

Umm it is possible to get winamp in your car... all you need is a computer witha tv out card. a wirless mouse and/or keyboard, a 12vDC to 120vAC power inverter, and a custom car audio shop god to connect the in dash screen to you computer. then the rest seems simple... most car cd players/amplifiers have RCA inputs, all your woudl have to do is plug those into the sound car fo the computer in your trunk... also you can buy "slim" cases to mount your hardware(ie: HD CDrom...etc) that are small enought to fit under the front seat of most cars...

*AND BREATHE*

SO... If you really want that bad you can do it... and all you'd really need is an old pentium 166 or something like that to run it...
windoze 98 runs on a p166...

Why make something idiot proof?? Someone will only make a better idiot!
