That is a small set of HDD's, only 120GB? My computer has 300GB in total, and its not exactly ground breaking technology.

Erm, actualy most of it is taken up by computer games, I mod them you see so I have to keep backups of the original files.

And once you have 5 different coppys of the same game installed so you can run a variety of mods the GB's start to mount up.

Plus I dule boot as well.

Nice to see somebody's still buying CRTs.
(Though where I live they don't make sense anymore, you'd pay more for electricity than the price of a decent TFT.)

Yeh, I know I need more HD space. The hard drives, the monitor, video card, sound card (SB Audigy Platinum eX), DVD-ROM, and speakers are all from my old computer. I just got a new tower with a new motherboard, processor, memory, and the CD-RW. I'm gonna try to upgrade the rest of the stuff one thing at a time, as I get more money.

I have to have the 80 GB drive anyways, I have about 6 years work of downloading music on it. (roughly 6000 songs, 40 GB of mp3s)

Nice system. And don't sweat the hard drive space...you can always add drives later, and they're getting cheaper by the day. Having the right core components are the most important part of it, and those you've got.

Okay, It's been awhile since I've posted, but my computer was stolen. I just finished getting my new one built with the insurance money. It's even better than the other one.

- Black Thermaltake Tsunami Dream Case (incl. side window w/ blue & purple lights inside)
- Lite-On 16x DVD-RW
- AOpen 52x CD-RW
- Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS Platinum
- 80 + 120 GB Hard drives
- Intel Pentium 4 3.60 GHz
- 1024 MB DDR2
- MSI P4/775 ATX 915N2 Motherboard
- Same monitor, speakers, keyboard, & mouse as old system.

This thing is awesome! I can run Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Quake 4, F.E.A.R., and Doom 3 at very high res and full graphics settings and still get a perfect framerate.

Sorry to hear about your old system getting stolen, but at least you got a better one built to replace it. I wish mine supported DDR2. I've only got 2048MB of PC3200 in mine. Btw, love the sound card. Same as mine.

120GB is plenty

That is about...

15 uncompressed DVD's at ~8gb per
or
24 modern games which comsume ~5gb per
or
24000 mp3's at ~5mb per

So thats plenty of space at least for a couple years. What I would concern myself with is getting a DX9 level video card with at least 256MB of video Ram. Oh and though its a bit bulky and cumbersome a quality CRT will still produce a better image then an LCD so if you have the space to spare a CRT is more then sufficient.

You obviously never tried uncompressing DVDs (or capturing to uncompressed/losslessly compressed video).

have so gaekwad .... I personaly never keep more then one on my drive at a time though... ya wiseass. First I rip and decrypt with DVD decrypter 3.2.1 then remove the superfulous extras and compress it down to about 4.3GB using DvD shrink 3.2.0 so that it fits on a sigle layer DvD. anyways, I dont think its very rational to keep that many uncompressed dvd's on a drive. I was simply trying to help convey the signifigant ammount of space he has in his new computer .

oh and in fact I have an uncompressed DvD on my drive right now.

have so... they are uncompressed video object files in their native mpeg-2 splendor, and when I compress them they are still video object files though the mpeg-2 splendor has been reduced a bit with the bitrate. Now if I were so inclined I could compress it into divx format (a derivative of avi) but I dont see any real personal benifit to doing such so I dont... so there .

And mpeg-2 is no compressed format?

Btw, the "divx format (a derivative of avi)" is only a container, the DivX video format is mpeg-4 asp.

For reference:

MPEG-2 -> lossy compressed format.
AVI -> container type / file extension
DivX -> MPEG-4 (better lossy compressed format)

He means "uncompressed" as in "not further compressed", as in the phrase "uncompressed Mp3".

[edit]Although I admit that "uncompressed Mp3" could be taken as a "wav" (from an Mp3)... Screw it.[/edit]

Exactly (as in your edit): uncompressed mp3 == wav (actually pcm*), uncompressed DVD == raw yuv video + pcm audio, possibly still muxed together in a container (eg. avi).

Uncompressed in a sense of "not further compressed" would only make sense if there was any further compression used on DVDs, but there isn't.

*wav is also just a container

MPEG-2 is an industry compression standard, of course its seen to us consumers as the raw data, but it is a form of compression none the less. We can of course further compress this into alternate formats or we can compress the native industry MPEG-2 by reducing the bit rate. Being that the definition of compression is to reduce in size or volume as if by squeezing, I believe that my interpitation is accurate. The initial data provided by the manufacture which is shown on my drive is uncompressed as far as mr mrs consumer is concerned. This of course can be “compressed” by various means as I have stipulated.

It's still incorrect. Uncompressed data is data that hasn't been compressed, simple as that.

What's more, calling DVDs uncompressed creates the misconception that they indeed contain, well, uncompressed video similar to the uncompressed audio on CDs.

Anyway, if you'd really have to deal with uncompressed video you'd need ~100GB per movie.

I agree completely though my speil above goes into some neuances.

we have gone on quite a tangent haven’t we? In any event there are some conflictions in your posts and I believe I have explained my perspective adequately enough. So lets conclude this little back in forth and go about out day eh?
