Just raise your monitor resolution and lower the refresh rate. By the time the draft comes around your eyes'll be so fucked up you'll be ineligible.

$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective Service must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation.
You guys read the entire thing?
Quote:
the program's initiation so the draft can begin at early as Spring 2005 -- just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections
The current administration is trying to get it enacted before their term is up, in case that turns out to happen.

This is the bill sponsor for HR 163, which happened in January of 2003.
These are the co-sponsors:
Rep Abercrombie, Neil - 1/7/2003 [HI-1]
Rep Brown, Corrine - 1/28/2003 [FL-3]
Rep Christensen, Donna M. - 5/19/2004 [VI]
Rep Clay, Wm. Lacy - 1/28/2003 [MO-1]
Rep Conyers, John, Jr. - 1/7/2003 [MI-14]
Rep Cummings, Elijah E. - 1/28/2003 [MD-7]
Rep Hastings, Alcee L. - 1/28/2003 [FL-23]
Rep Jackson-Lee, Sheila - 1/28/2003 [TX-18]
Rep Lewis, John - 1/7/2003 [GA-5]
Rep McDermott, Jim - 1/7/2003 [WA-7]
Rep Moran, James P. - 1/28/2003 [VA-8]
Rep Norton, Eleanor Holmes - 1/28/2003 [DC]
Rep Stark, Fortney Pete - 1/7/2003 [CA-13]
Rep Velazquez, Nydia M. - 1/28/2003 [NY-12]
S 89, on the other hand was sponsored by Sen Hollings, Ernest F. [SC], but was co-sponsored by no one.

S 89 and HR 163 summary:
Universal National Service Act of 2003 - Declares that it is the obligation of every U.S. citizen, and every other person residing in the United States, between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a two-year period of national service, unless exempted, either as a member of an active or reserve component of the armed forces or in a civilian capacity that promotes national defense. Requires induction into national service by the President. Sets forth provisions governing: (1) induction deferments, postponements, and exemptions, including exemption of a conscientious objector from military service that includes combatant training; and (2) discharge following national service.

Chev's great advice for the day:
As a constituent, you should e-mail your representatives on this matter, especially if you are aged 17-25

I am because I have bigger goals in mind for my son.

On the bright side: Anyone older than 25 will have a greater selection of civilian jobs, including head burger flipper at McDonald's

That's just an online poll and has nothing to do with an actual election that hasn't happened yet.

All your states are belong to us...

It never has been a real democratic election- if it was, the winner of the popular, not the winner of the electoral or Supreme Court vote would win.

However, I'll get 4F-ed for a number of reasons. Even if I didn't, I would burn my draft card.

surely college would have to be an option?

are they trying to breed a country full of uneducated knuckle-draggers?

that'd be funnier if it wasn't my actual opinion on the matter.

College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.
College isn't a scapegoat this time, I'm afraid.

The Bush twins are of the right age. I wonder if they'll get drafted.

Most EU states are in the process of abolishing it.
In germany only one in three fit men get drafted even though they already cut down military service to, I think, 9 months.

we just got one step closer to ablishment here, only one in seven get's drafted, and the service has been cut to three months....

next step abolishment...

Been wanting this for ages, we need a proffesional army, instead of some teenagers running around with a toy gun from WWII wasting their time, and costing truckloads of money....

With literacy/typing skills like that, they probably wouldn't let you hold an unloaded M-16, much less allow you to wear army fatigues...

Why? What is happening in Iraq I do not believe in. I also do not believe in killing a human in any way. If I were drafted and I didn't dodge, I wouldn't fight. I dont care what they do to me, I will not shoot a human and they cannot force me.

Now, I would not be opposed to doing work for the military here in the US as long as no killing is involved.

Heh, well said and so True. Fortunately, I can't be drafted either. I have bigger plans than to be drafted and forced a gun in my hand for a war that I don't support. Also you can dodge the draft by going back to school...But If you can't go to Canada, what's wrong with going to Mexico?

my issue was that not allowing people to avoid service because of college commitments is a waste of valuable human resources.

oh, plus the fact that the US is not defending its country with these military actions. fair enough, draft dodging would be a bit suspect if your country needed you to perform a duty, but the way it stands they're sending young people in to die for what are largely political and economic reasons.

do you really want to be put down as an expense?
