Obama admits doing lines. Bush kinda does...

Does any one care if their elected officials did drugs, 10,20 30 years ago?

I am more apt to vote for someone who has had similar life experiences as me ie. drugs, blowjobs, etc.

I do think it's a little odd that these same guys passed such tough drug laws.

Drunk driving would have gotten Bush permanently expelled from Yale today. Possession of cocaine carries a prison sentence (not just jail). Not so in the old days. Unless you were in Arizona or Texas.

Ya know, I always hated and still do the fact that BC wasn't honest about his trying pot. If he'd simply said, "Sure I smoked grass a few times in college. I defy you to find someone who didn't in 1972. But I was Rhodes scholar and my studies and completing my education were much more important to me than goofing off. I didn't like it when I tried it and never touched it again." He would have deflected all the flack and would have won kudos for honesty -- something not often present for politicians of any persuasion. He should have hired me as his PR guy.

I do care that bush did cocaine, and was a drunk driver.

I do not thing marijuana is the "gateway drug" unlike alcohol and cigarettes which are technically our nation's gateway drugs. Cocaine on the other hand, is severely detrimental to one's health. Drunk driving is severely detrimental to other people's health. yeah not good. poor decision making at the age of 30.

Basically, if you were anywhere near your majority in the 1970s, you did drugs or were a nun.

I am a little young for the hayday of this, but it wasn't uncommon to find a line of coke on the bar at your local pub. Nobody cared much.

Until Reagan.....

And you only care about that because it was Bush. You wouldn't care about Clinton.

Find an allegation against George W. as credible and damaging as Jennifer Flowers' account of Bill Clintons cocaine habit. You'd also need to ignore Bill Clintons alleged hospitalization from a cocaine overdose while he was governor of AK.

The democrats were reaching for something more to smear Bush with, but it's a dog that don't hunt.

See, that's what worries me about it; I've no problem with people doing drugs, but it does undermine the position of someone who condemns those who do it strongly when they're unwilling to disclose or apologise for their own background in it.

People have very polarised views about what matters in politics, but I think that sometimes the reasons they matter are forgotten.

I googled it and saw nothing and since I've never read about it before today and from a less than credible source, I cry bullshit.

And that includes the inept previous post.

Clintons brother got a year for coke and ????

http://www.time.com/time/nation/arti...165992,00.html

And Bill gave him a pardon:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Clinton%2C_Jr.

He pardoned Carlos Vignali for organised cocaine trafficking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Vignali

Vignali was the kingpin in a lucrative drug ring that shipped hundreds of pounds of cocaine from Los Angeles to Minnesota. He was sentenced to 15 years.

The allegations of Clintons drug overdose were allegedly made by Dr. Samuel Houston, Hugh Rodhams doctor. I have not been able to find a mainstream source to corroborate this on the web, although it's documented in the Clinton Chronicles, a book on Bill Clinton.

You've done it enough for Bush without any references....

I'm not even vilifying Clinton about this. Just about anyone who could afford it did coke. Hell, the DeLorean even had a coke mirror.....

I got to be 18 at the end of the disco-snowblower days of the 1970s.

That's how nose piercing started. Coke heads would burn a hole in their nose and put an earring in to hide it.

Look around at people my age and a little older. You'll see a lot of them don't have a septum. They burned it with coke.

Who was doing coke?. Anyone who could afford it.

I like Obama well enough, but I don't think he has a snow balls chance in hell of winning a presidential election.

Obama seems like a real smart guy. He's just in the wrong party and too young.

He is, however, exactly the sort of person needed to restore dignity and intelligence to the democratic party.

If democrats were all Obama.... I'm in....

I think he's definately NOT in the wrong party. I see no elephant with a snowball's chance. If you're thinking McCain, he got owned on TV by at least a couple different hosts. They flat out made him look like a fool or at least like he was being interrogated by the Vietcong all over again. Outside of him, who is there?
As long as we keep Hillary and Kerry out, I'm more than happy to write Obama in right now. CNN's already taken aim at him after their severely biased piece about his having Hussein for a middle name and dressing identically to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Yeah caught that, cheap shot.

I reserve judgement on Obama. If he leads the democratic party, all is well. If he follows it, then he's nothing.

I still doubt he could win in 2008. If I were him, I wouldn't try. He's young, and has plenty of time to be president when things aren't quite as volatile.

If I were him, I'd decline for now. Who needs to buy this pain?.

I think the next president, whoever it is, will be as hated as Bush.

That is, unless Bush gets Bin Laden and shows some progress in Iraq. Then no democrat could win.

I think this is unlikely.

the Clinton Chronicles, a book on Bill Clinton.<<<

No source but a right wing nutjob bs slander book. I was right. Monkeys flying. etc..... no small wonder there was no msm validation for this made up story. That's a common Faux news network/drudge report meme: Make up slanderous shit, then yell about how no one in the mainstream media is covering this breaking story. Of course they aren't covering it. journalistic ethics requires interviews, reporting and fact checking. AND citing sources for all of the above.

And
Mattress
when making an outlandish statement in a debate (or even a landish one) it is the responsibility of the statement maker to back on one's words. Not... "go Google it." If I make a statement based on todays headline, saying, "Pick up the NYT or the Des Moines Register and read" is okay. But a statement making allegations never before brought forward except in a nutcase slander book; well it's not up to me to spend my time to validate the story -- though yes, I did google "Bill Clinton cocaine overdose hospitalization" If we are ato have a reasonable debate here, some degree of honesty has to apply from both sides. ROH should have cited the book in his first post. At least we'd know where he gets his info.

I, too, think Obama is as yet, too inexperienced and untested to run for prez. I'd like to see him do at least one full term in the senate so he'll have an actual record to run on.

The next pres, no matter which party is going to have a helluva an uphill battle to fix all the broken plumbing of our democracy, not to mention restore respect and standing in the rest of the world.

I miss not living in a police state. It's not that I have a problem with the law myself. I just get tired of seeing people I know get creamed for relative nothing.

I think mostly people work out their own shit, without need of long imprisonment, social workers, drug counselors, probation officers and other government leeches.

My thinking is "No autopsy, No foul".

That's one thing about the US, everyone has to be properly punished.
