_______________________________________________________________________

Notes:

Many input plugins were tweaked for versatility and better performance, for example:
The MP4 plugin can now play MPEG-4 HE-AAC encoded files, which eliminates the need to use third party plugins for certain files.
The AAC/AAC+ plugin will manually calculate the bitrate when the decoder is unable to. This allows for seeking within MPEG-2 AAC files encoded using variable bitrate.
The CD playback plugin has been improved to reduce (and on some drives, eliminate) the small pause between tracks.

Many improvements were made to increase overall performance and reduce memory usage, for example:
Playlist entries now take up significantly less memory. Many testers reported that memory usage dropped three-fold on very large playlists (10,000+ songs).
The modern skinning engine has been significantly optimized. Skin loading and switching is much faster. Typical CPU usage is three times less in most scenarios (desktop-alpha mode will still be slow).
The startup routine has been slightly tweaked to improve Winamp load time. Load time is fast even when using a modern skin.

New in_wm.dll now supports WMA, WMV, ASF and mms:// streams. If you previously unchecked support for video you'll still get video support if selecting WMA under the Audio section of the installer (more info). On upgrades, the installer will also automatically remove WMV and ASF from the DirectShow Decoder extension list.
If you don't want WMV/ASF support then you can remove them from the in_wm config after (prefs > plugins > input > in_wm > config).
The only other setting which you might need to adjust (via: in_wm config) is 'Speaker Configuration' (default value is 5.1 speakers). Note, we do not recommend changing ANY settings in the in_wm Advanced config, not unless you REALLY know what you're doing (thankfully, there's a Reset button which will reset all defaults).
Also note that you no longer need to add /.wma to the end of mms:// url's :-)
If you use Playlist Loader plugin for .asx playlist support, then make sure you've got the latest version, and then go to: Prefs > File Types > Extra Options, and Select All (to make pl_loader exclude adding /.wma when parsing .asx playlists). Note: If Winamp version is 5.12 or higher, by default, pl_loader will no longer add /.wma to the end of any mms:// url's.

Note the new "Download System Codecs" option on Screen 5 of the installer options. This will download and install the Windows Media 9 Codecs (approx. 5mb), but only if required. If you uncheck this option or if the download fails, then in_wm and enc_wma might not behave properly (assuming you install support for them in Screen 2 of the installer options).

"Use sonic engine" now 2 separate/unlinked options in 'Prefs > CD Ripping' and 'Prefs > Plugins > Input > in_cdda > config' (so you can now simultaneously use sonic for faster ripping, and use aspi/spti for gapless playback)

Support for %cdengine% in ATF string (will show if cd playback is using sonic, spti, aspi, etc engine), eg.
[%artist% - ]$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))[ '('using %cdengine%')']

Winamp now supports he-aac in .m4a/.mp4 container (aka: Nero Digital), so there's no longer any need to recommend the 3rd-party rarewares/audiocoding in_mp4 plugin. Note, there's still no support for mp4 video or proprietary ALAC (Apple lossless) - in either the Nullsoft or 3rd-party in_mp4 plugin.

Take note of the new Winamp\System folder, and leave well alone.

Official Final Build version = 5.1.2.272

Update

12th Dec 2005

Build 5.1.2.275 now available

This was a silent update which fixes a bug where Winamp would freeze when trying to access dead mms:// streams.

Improved: [gen_ff] optimized skinning engine
Improved: [out_disk] new features

More details?

BTW,
Amir is still developing NSIS 2, no? In that case should he really be in the 'original developers' part of the credits?
(just being pedantic...)

@ YtseJam

There's more details about the gen_ff optimizations in Benski's notes above.

The new out_disk features are basically: option to disable the playlist indexing at the beginning of the filename, output filename format options, and an option to display 'save as' dialog for each file.

Also, Amir wrote the gen_hotkeys plugin.
As to whether he should be in the original or current section... who knows?

Select All, ie. to exclude all (which I think I already said in my above notes).

WOW. I mean, just WOW. Before it took 5 seconds or so to close Winamp, now it happens instantly. It also loads way faster. Great work!

edit= oh, it still takes some time to close. Less though.

the next official build of pl_loader will most likely have the default altered for 5.12 (ran out of time getting the newest build for egg done) with the possibility of dropping the added prefs page on 5.12+ installs (not sure yet incase since i need to add some other prefs into the plugin to control the filetypes added, etc)

Good to see CDs getting a bit of love
Looks like the Sonic Engine playback problems are fixed at last

Support for %cdengine% in ATF string (will show if cd playback is using sonic, spti, aspi, etc engine), eg.
[%artist% - ]$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))[ '('using %cdengine%')']

Can't make sense of the text used here, shouldn't it be 'MCI/SPTI - ASPI - Sonic' rather than 'MCI - ASPI/SPTI - Sonic' ? ('MCI/SPTI' = input via CD channel, 'ASPI' = input via wave channel). Its a bit difficult to cover everything I know because you have to cater to two different flavours of OS.
Anyway MCI/SPTI seems to make more sense.

What does that mean? does it mean that winamp now recognizes foreign characters? i was trying a very long time to get my playlist to read chinese characters and does this mean it works now?

If your language in Windows is set to Chinese, you are using MP4/M4A files or WMA/WMV files, and the files are appropriated 'tagged', you will see Chinese characters in the song title. You might have to remove the files from the media library and re-add them for the changes to take effect.

Also, change your playlist font (Ctrl-P, uncheck "use skin or language pack font", choose Arial Unicode MS or some other font with Chinese glyphs).

because in_wave (and to a slight extent the current jtfe builds for queue restore) is not compatible with the multi-user support and there's no point in enabling it when things aren't complete (was a decision a few of us felt was the best thing to do). there is a work around for in_wave's inability using in_trouble™ (is a loader dll for input, gen and output plugins but needs a bit more validation on some weird plugins, etc before public release)

HI all,

I've installed Winamp 5.12 and during installation the resident protection of Spybot S&D reported the following:

PHP Code:
09.12.2005 ã14:07:00 Allowed value "wextract_cleanup0" (new data"rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 "C:\DOCUME~1\Kostadin\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\""added in System Startup global entry!
09.12.2005 ã14:07:24 Allowed value "MPlayer2_FixUp" (new data"C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe /Fixups"added in System Startup user entry!
09.12.2005 ã14:07:51 Allowed value "WMC_RebootCheck" (new data"C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe /FixUps"added in System Startup global entry!
09.12.2005 ã14:08:00 Allowed value "wextract_cleanup0" (new data""deleted in System Startup global entry!
09.12.2005 ã14:08:10 Allowed value "WinampAgent" (new data"C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe"added in System Startup global entry!
09.12.2005 ã14:14:31 Allowed value "WinampAgent" (new data""deleted in System Startup global entry

I can't understand what are most of those things (except for the "winampa.exe", which is the Winamp agent). Can anybody explain them to me? Those things (except the Winamp agent) haven't been in the previous installers. I know that because Spybot hasn't given me those reports (like I said except for the Winamp agent). I have installed the Windows media codecs. Are those entries related to them?

Thank you for the help in advance!

Sorry if my english is bad, but I think it is better to have something than nothing. SpeechLab 2.0. JAWS for Windows. ABBYY FineReader. LAME encoder. The GodFather (audio file manager).

@k_kolev1985
Yes, those entries are related to Windows Media Codecs.
Nothing to worry about whatsoever.
See the notes in the first post above for further details.

@everyone
There will be new builds uploaded to the server sometime within the next few hours.
The reason for this is that we found a bug which would cause Winamp to lockup when attempting to connect to dead mms:// streams.
The current build is 5.2.1.272, the new build will be 5.1.2.275
(check winamp.exe properties for confirmation).
I will post again (and edit the first post accordingly) to let you know when the new builds are available on the nullsoft server.

[EDIT]

Apparently, the new builds won't be on the Nullsoft server until Monday now, heh :-(

Why not a 5.121? It is more clear that user should update...

because that's what they want to do and since it's only just gone live it's easier to change the current build than bump the version number, etc before the main 'update is available' flag is set on the site

Probably posted hundreds of times elsewhere on the forums, but I feel nice today:

Winamp Full and any MP3 bundle currently being offered include an option in the installer to install eMusic's free trial software for their legal download service. If you don't want to install it, just uncheck it in the installer options.

All right, since it has come up a few times already, for those who want WMA support, but not video support and don't want to even SEE video support in the preferences.

Windows Media Decoder from Winamp 5.112 from the good folks at Sawg Stuff.

I am having the same problem with at least AVI and WMV files, both of which are set to play through DirectShow. Sound works fine but instead of video I get a still shot of whatever was behind the video window when it opened.

I also have DivX6 installed.

Windows XP SP2, with an "Intel Extreme Graphics" video card.

EDIT: Everything plays fine in WMP and played fine before I updated to the latest Winamp version, so I suspect the problem is with Winamp.

EDIT 2: An nearly identical computer using DivX 5.2.1 has no problems, so the issue may be DivX 6 related.

EDIT 3: I uninstalled DivX 6 and rebooted the computer, and video now plays fine. I believe therefore that Winamp 5.12 has an incompatibility with DivX 6.

Maybe uninstall DivX and use ffdshow for divx/xvid instead. Works perfectly here.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

If what I read is correct, that would imply that either Winamp does unicode <-> codepage conversion, or is writing tags with that encoding to the tag.

I've noticed that Winamp will write Shift-JIS ID3v2 tags if you're set up for Japanese, however this violates the ID3v2 standard (requirement is either ISO-8859-1 or UTF-16.) I imagine it also violates AAC tagging standards, as it does OGG, but at last check Winamp couldn't display OGG tags that were in anything not using roman letters because the OGG plugin's tag editor encoded tags properly.

microlith: Both the MP4/M4A and WMA/WMV plugins write Unicode tags and allow Unicode editing from the "view file info" dialog. However, when Winamp queries for metadata for other uses (playlist title, media library database, etc), they are converted to the local code page. When Winamp writes metadata to the file automatically (cd ripping, media library database edits), these two plugins will convert from the local code page to Unicode.

Files tagged with ID3 (mp3, aac) do not yet support Unicode. Ogg Vorbis should support Unicode, but I have not yet reviewed the plugin for proper operation.
