That's the dumbest thing I've ever seen , Wii?, wtf, they've been reading their own press too much.

Wii, christ, I'm gonna look so cool walking into the shop and asking the guy behind the counter 'ooooh, can I have a Wii please, I'm desperate for a Wii'

Know what's interesting?
Every single time Nintendo announces something, anything, it's always met with "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
That aside, "Wii" is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. At least it looks like "Wifi," which could be intentional. I do think, hopefully, that they might second-guess the name when they see the degree to which English speakers prefer the term "Revolution" because of how cool it sounds, and how lame "whee!" sounds in English.
On the plus side, they can advertise using this song:

My comment on Slashdot (sorry), reproduced here:

For bonus fun, if you pronounce it like "Wifi" but dropping the "f", you sound like a Northerner saying "wahey".

I've heard that some people didn't know it was pronounced "we" (thought it was "why") and so it came out as "Nintendo, why?"

I dunno what philosophy Nintendo are following, but they seem hell bent on a course of self oblivion.

They might be fondly remembered as the company that tried to be different with their two screen handheld and oddly named and controlled console, but they run the real risk of being also rans in the console market.

Wii really (look how crap it looks when you write it) needed to be a killer app for them to regain some ground on Sony and MS otherwise they run the very real risk of becoming the third supplier in an ever decreasing market, MS have a head start on everyone, Sony are gonna pick up the 20 billion (exagerated) PS2 users who want the next best thing , and lets face it the PS3 looks mightly impressive on paper, Nintendo are gonna be limping home third with their under specced machine whose main selling point is going to be 'play your games with a magic wand', either that or 'play all those retro games you stopped playing 20 years ago on your new $300 console'

I love Nintendo stuff, my GBA is used to death, I gave up my PS2 to buy a cube two years after they came out, even my quirky DS is much fun, but the Wii looks to be a step to far.

Remember the time a few years ago when it was all Sega and Nintendo owning the market, and then along came Sony, the Nintendo fan base stayed put, Sega misfired with Saturn and Sony stole a march on them both, look what happend to Sega......... now a few years later Sony are still way out in front and MS are stealing a march on everyone, again lets face it the 360 is a seriously heavy duty bit of kit.

I hope to be proved wrong I really do, but I suspect outside of Japan, where quirky always sells, I forsee the Wii going bargain bucket within 12 months of it's launch.

Seriously, look at the DS.
Every Single Announcement was called "the worst idea ever" and "certain failure."
And now the DS rapes the PSP every night before bed.
So I'm willing to have a little faith in the system, for now.
I do agree that the name is dumb, though.

If the rumors are true, it'll be a comparative bargain at launch.

The DS and the PSP are different systems, for different purposes. The same distinction goes between the XBox360/PS3 and the Wii. Nintendo aren't trying to compete.

What they need to do, when this comes out, is arrange with stores that the demo system be playable in a different place from the other systems, so that non-gamers are more likely to bump into one, say "hey what's this" and try it.

I don't see nintendo going away anytime soon. They have a very popular range of exclusive brands/characters.

Though they have been doing some massive brand dilution with all of the mario games.

I'm interested to see what the wii can do. Based on their marketing BS I'm expecting to see a lot of multiplayer/party games. They already have a good track record in this arena.

Why it works:
Think about your parents. Can they name a current video game or a modern game system? They might know "Nintendo" or something, but most adults I know stumble over phrases like "Mario Party" and "Playstation 2." I don't know why, but it seems like after a certain age, you lose the ability to learn new proper nouns, especially ones as abstract as those related to gaming. But they do know personal pronouns. :P

True enough.
But the Wii doesn't have anything to do with "Gonads" or "Strife"... yet.
I'm sure someone will make a full version, probably in flash, at some point.

Nintendo never sells their stuff at a loss. i saw an article saying that because of that consumers should trust them less. every other company is willing to take a risk. "you should get the other consoles because your getting more than what you pay for"

Penny Arcade had an interesting response to that article:

Quote:
1. We should buy Sony and Microsoft products because they lose money on them

2. Losing money now is the same as making money in the future

3. Selling your console at a profit is a sign of fear and uncertainty

4. Nintendo doesn't believe in their own product

Awesome! It's a Goddamn retard rodeo over there. It's fun to think about the author tippity-tappin' this one in while he eats light bulbs in the last car of the circus train.
Sony and Microsoft have other lines of products (sony makes electronics, MS makes software) to fall back on, so they can afford to lose money on hardware. All nintendo sells are games and game consoles, so they can't afford to take a loss like that.
Even if they could sell it for $199, why bother, when they can charge $250 and still be $150 cheaper (or $350 cheaper) than their competitors?

people seem to be worried that consumers will think that the price for the core 360 is too close and the wii's graphics arent close enough.

ive come across so many rediculous graphic fanboy arguments that all seem to start with "if you look closely." if you think about it because that it is so its in a way a contridiction of itself.

A price mark at or below $200 would of been considerably more appealing in the event that there is any validity to the leaked specs and the developer claims that the Nintendo Wii is roughly as powerful as the original Xbox ( Source 1, source 2, source 3 ) . I understand that this is not the angle Nintendo is going for but liking a good value for the dollar the $250 price point only further encourages me to wait it out and see if this motion sensing turns out to be gold or a gimmick.

The $250 price gives them headroom to do drastic price drops when they need to.

theres got to be something more to (at least) call of duty for the wii. i find it difficult to believe that a company would try that LITTLE on something they put out.

there is a better version of that hands on in the weekly section at ign. it happens right off you dont have to sit through much for it to come up.
