As many already know, I work for the Public Works department of the city of Gulfport. What many probably don't know is that our equipment stockyard is right next to the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. So needless to say, I can get some decent pictures once in a while of planes taking off and landing. I caught these pictures a couple days ago while I was standing on top of the limestone stockpile. For those who might not know much about planes, it's a DC-10. A rather large plane. We don't usually see planes this size here in Gulfport, but this one is servicing the National Guard base that's here, probably transporting troops for deployments overseas. The SeaBees also deploy from this airport as well.

Damn, you ARE close.
I've got to get a camera like yours. If nothing else, I need to get shots of the girls, errr......wildlife here

They're flying the big guys full of skiers in here now that winter has set in. Not real big but I'm thinking 737s.
Got to watch one come in a couple of weeks ago with vapor trails coming off his wingtips all the way to the runway cause it was soooooooo daaaaaaammmmmmnnnn coooooooooolllllddd.
-41 F officialy at the airport.

This is the 737-500 that I flew on back in January. I flew on this plane from Gulfport to Houston, and then I flew on a 737-800 from there to Seattle/Tacoma. The 737 is a very impressive little plane. I wasn't expecting all that power when I first got on it. Just by watching the planes taking off from the distance, they don't look like their moving that fast, but when you're actually on the plane, it's a different story. I watched this 737 take off dozens of times (leaves Gulfport at 06:45 every morning to go to Houston), and I never expected it to be that powerful. Then, when I finally got to fly on the plane, I got to experience what 26.4 tons of thrust can do.

And -41f is fuggin' cold. It was 71f yesterday here.

Great pictures!

I live close to an airbase, so I could make some really nice shots of F-16s, if I had a camera. Sometimes 737s and 757s also land there, because it's also used as a (very small) civilian airport.

Here's a picture that I caught of a USN Boeing 717 (not sure what the military designation is, but it's the same airframe as the 717). Kinda dark in this shot, but it came out ok. I took this picture the week before last.

[edit]
Actually, this is a Douglas DC-9. If I'm not mistaken, it (and the MD-80s/MD-90s) is the precursor to the 717, though. Looks the same, but the 717 has turbofan engines.

Would anyone happen to know what kind of plane this is? I took this picture two days after that last one. Not sure what it is, but this little plane hardly takes any runway before it's up in the air.

Here's a Northwest DC-9. Took this picture eight days ago. :] Sorry for the weird resolution sizes. All these pictures were 6.3mp each, and I had to crop/resize them to make them fit in attachments.

I think that's a Dassault Falcon 50/900.

Google image search says you're right. Thanks.

Comparing my picture with the ones on Dassault's site, it's either a Falcon 900DX or 900EX. Nice looking, for a French plane.

Ok, back to American-made planes.

Took this picture Friday afternoon just after I finished work. It was a little cloudy, so it didn't turn out that great, but it's not that bad. It's a Boeing 717, a newer model than the Northwest DC-9 that I attached a few posts up. This is a nice angle to see the leading edge flaps still extended just after the plane got airborn.

There were a couple of these guys flying around here the other day. Two A-10 Thunderbolt IIs doing training maneuvers, to be exact. I only managed to get a few pictures before they flew off, and this was the best one. I need a telephoto lens for my camera, too. I like this picture a little bit, though.

Got this cool shot yesterday afternoon just after I got off work. It's an Embraer RJ 145. Either Continental Airlines has a few of these flying in and out of the airport here in Gulfport, or this plane gets around the block more than Brittney Spears. It's actually a cool looking little plane. Made in Brazil, too.

Took this picture yesterday, too. This one is a Bombardier RJ 200. It looks better when it's bright outside. It was kinda cloudy when I got this shot, so it's a little hard to see.

I'll try to get some more pictures of that DC-10 if I can. It and another DC-10 flew in here yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to get pictures of either of them.

A pair of F16's buzzed the tower the other day. By the time I got the loader turned off and exited the cab, they had disappeared leaving only that delicious thunderous roar.....

Every once in a while, a squadron of F-15s does that here. It's even more awesome to watch them take off. Not much can compare to the sound of F-15s taking off with full afterburners... save for a B-1B taking off with full afterburners. A year or two ago, we had three B-1B Lancers here in Gulfport on training exercises. I watched all three of them take off. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that was more badass than that. I felt the rumble in my chest and the wet spot in my pants.

When I was in Abilene (big B1 base there) for a job several years ago, each morning at dawn, they'd take off for day missions. At dusk, as we left the plant, they'd all fly back in.
We were alays too far away to get the full effect but you know how badass those are.
Even the 737's that take off here get me going but you're right, nothing compares to full afterburner sound/vibration.

You're right. I'm so sad they plan to close the air force base here this year... I'm gonna miss that sound. The air force only has F-16s here, but occasionally something else flies in from other countries to exercise or to show off. I believe it was in 2004, that they opened the base for the public for a few days. The did airshows too, it was so great to see a MiG-29 with the dirty smoke coming out of its engines, an Apache doing a loop, a stunt team of F-16s, of course all planes standing on the ground and what not. You couldn't get close enough to touch them, but you could get as close as a few meters. Among them was an A-10, all kinds of fighters and helicopters, but also old aircraft and transport aircraft. Those were 3 magnificent days...

If I'd have had my digital camera at the last airshow here at Keesler AFB, I'd have gotten shitloads of awesome pictures. I didn't get my digital camera until last christmas, though. I could've gotten some awesome close-ups of a B-1B then... not to mention everything else you can think of. :[

Oh, I did manage to get this cool shot a few days ago just before work started. It's another Northwest DC-9, but as you can see, it's got a different paintjob. There are several DC-9s/717s flying in and out of Gulfport run by a couple different airlines, actually. I managed to move my camera at just the right speed to keep the plane steady in the frame as it taxied to the runway, so the background is blurred. I'm rather proud of this shot.

Got a couple pictures of these two T-38 Talons this afternoon. These two are from John C Stennis Space Center over in Hancock county (the county just west of here). NASA uses them for training and flight data, and every once in a while they'll come over to Gulfport. This is actually somewhat of a rare opportunity. The first picture is pretty crappy because they were too far out to get any detail, but once they flew over head, I got one more shot that didn't suck quite so much.

Yeah, that movie still pisses me off.

There were a couple F-15s here today, but I never got a chance to get pictures of them. I found out later that they were the President's escorts. Air Force One flew over this afternoon just before I got off of work, but it was a little too high up to get a decent picture of. Also, there was a C-17 Globemaster on the north end of the airfield, but it didn't take off before it got dark, so I couldn't get a picture of it, either. :\

I did manage to get this picture, though. Some vapor trails from a jet at cruising altitude. I have no clue what kind of plane it was because I couldn't see it. :P It was flying directly away from the sun, though, so the vapor trails made this really cool shadow effect in front of the plane.

Nice.

I was outside tonight at around sunset, and I saw two jets, and parallel vapor trails going west into the sunset. I wish I would have taken a picture. The vapor trails looked real neat against the orange sky.

Oh, I managed to get another few shots of that DC-10 again today. This was the first time I've seen it here for a couple weeks, and I was just lucky enough to catch it as it took off this evening after work. He must've known that I wanted to take pictures because he used up almost all of the runway, so he was really low when he flew past me.

I also managed to get a few shots of this C-130j around lunch time today. They regularly fly C-130s around this airport since it's part of the National Guard base, so air training maneuvers are common. Haven't seen many of these flying around lately, though, so this was the first change I'd gotten to take a picture of a C-130 for quite some time now.
