I was checking some graphics sites out for wallpaper and I noticed something called "skins" for a program called Winamp 1.8 something. So I checked out the website and I'm still here. The website didn't have forums at the time (mid 1998?). A very different place back then.

I saw an MP3 site in 1997 that recommended it. Used it ever since.

Check out the old versions of Winamp here. All still available for download. And especially check out the screenshot section.

I read about it on a comparison page of WinAMP 0.92 vs. WinPlay 1.3.

it was prolly about 1998. i was looking for mp3's on the internet with hotbot (before mp3 = pr0n on teh intarnet). there was a site i got an mp3 off of that said something like "wtf are you doing here if you dont have winamp? you cant play these without Winamp. go to winamp.com and get it.' so i got it from there and promptly found out that my comp was too slow for winamp. i was reintroduced in late 99 wheni had to show a buddy how to burn a cd. then i found these forums and w00t, here we are now.

missyob made me post this.

I heard of it by downloading Netscape 4.7 in January of 1999. Downloaded a bunch of players like Real Jukebox, Windows Media Player, even used the crappy player that came with Windows. I didn't fiddle much around with Winamp until I figured out that it can play cds which I loved doing most of the time. Then in September of 2001 I decided to download mp3s after the whole ordeal was over with Napster. Thats when I wanted a player that can play mp3s and cds. I went to Winamp.com and looked all over the place for neat cool stuff for Winamp. Stumbled on NSDN, got Winamp3 (Alpha, then Beta), and signed onto forums.winamp.com.

The help desk at Idaho State University (my former job) created a CD to sell to students that included programs we recommended. Among those programs was Netscape. Winamp was installed with Netscape (don't know why it was on the CD). So I first discovered Winamp in the Netscape folder in the start menu.

First time I heard about winamp, I had a job at the time and winamp was shareware.

When my supervisor wasn't watching I visited a lot of south park sites and I ran into one of them that had skins for winamp. I downloaded the skin. first I unzipped it and tried to figure out what the hell it was. After a while I finally downloaded winamp and was able to see the skin in all of its glory (it sucked)

Since then I have used winamp.

i was looking for a windows media player replacement on my first computer and i found winamp, sonique, and musicmatch jukebox. i thought winamp had incredibly small buttons,so i cancelled it out. and musicmatch just sucked ass. but sonique was ok,so i kept it for about a year. then, when a thread like "post your playlist" or something came up in one of my most visited forums,i was struck with awe at the fact that these people actually had the time to type out each and every song. so i asked them why the hell did they type out the name of every song, and they said they didn`t,that they had used the generate html playlist feature in winamp. so i redownloaded winamp and eventually found the double size button so the buttons were bigger. and i have a been a winamp user and sonique abuser ever since.

I found out that WMP was shit. Then I found out that Realplayer was very shit. So I tried Winamp and loved it. I think I signed up to the forums to ask some petty n00b question, I can't remember what it was.

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty

My brother's friend compiled a CD of useful programs about 3 years ago. The CD had serveral MP3 programs such as winamp (which I think was 2.62 I don't remember), sonique, and the new Windows Media Player 6.4. I tried all of them, but Winamp was the best.

I heard of Winamp 2.3 from a friend, i downloaded it and one day i though that id be brave so i delved further than the Home button. I thought that id have a look at the forums link but i didnt appreciate forums back then and i was prejudiced cos i saw how everyone was flaming each other on other forums around the web.
Then Vie, reintroduced me to Winamp and i registered as Inatlantis, had problems so re-registered as andrewsanders! I want to say thankyou to Vie and thank you to everyone else who has been so kind and helpfull in the forums!

I was on the volkswagen site, and they had songs from their commercials available for download, so I downloaded them and was like, "What is this MP3?" so I searched for it and found Winamp. Back in the days of direct links to copywritten songs everywhere...

I typed in "Free MP3" in a search engine and MP3 Player came up. What da ya know, it was Winamp. And then I seen SHOUTcast, I read what it was and wanted to be a part of it. Then I found this in a FAQ when I had a question. 1 and a half years with Winamp, about 1 year with SHOUTcast, and almost 6 months here
