Winamp Essentials Pack 5.34 Beta
________________________________________________________________________

Notes:

Please report any issues with the beta in this thread only.
Make sure your report is complete, according to the stickys in Bug Reports
(clean install, no 3rd-party plugins, full method of reproduction, sys specs, etc).

Particular areas which need testing are:
-IPv6 streaming
-Windows 98/ME - does everything (in general) still work ok?
-CD Burning - needs testing on Win9x & Vista
-FLAC - does everything still work ok? (playback, transcoding, burning, etc)

Re: [ml_local] Possible duplicate entries & isempty/isnotempty fixes
On first Winamp\Media Library run, the built-in Reindexer will kick in and quickly rebuild the ml database. Basically, it will remove any duplicate entries (for all entries with the exact same path & filename / 5.33-specific bug), and will also remove blank data fields. This means that instead of using queries such as ?album="" to search for entries with no Album tag, you'll now be able to use ?album isempty instead.

Re: ????? in taskbar with unicode titles
Winamp.exe is now a unicode program. This (almost)* completes the entire unicode conversion process which has taken place throughout the 5.2x-5.3x series (yay!). As noted, some 3rd-party (mainly General Purpose and Media Library, and some Input) plugins will break unicode support and make the taskbar title / systray tooltip revert back to ?????? for unicode titles. There is nothing we can do about this, and the only solution is for the 3rd-party plugin authors to update their plugins according to the 5.3x SDK.
Also worth noting is that the plugins provided in older versions of the external Winamp Essentials Pack will also require updating. As it stands, the older versions of the plugins in the Essential Pack come under the "(note that many third party plugins will cause this to revert back to ????)" bracket. To fix said problem, you will need to upgrade to the new Winamp Essentials Pack 5.34 Beta. Also check DrO's site for any updated unicode-compatible versions of any of his other plugins that you might be using.

* ml_bookmarks, ml_history & ml_pmp still don't support unicode (support is planned for 5.35 or later)

Re: [enc_lame] Better output samplerate selection for transcoding
This means that the MP3 Encoder will now automatically detect the input samplerate and limit the output bitrate accordingly when transcoding. For example, if the input file is a 22.1KHz 8-bit WAV file, then enc_lame will transcode it to a 22.1KHz MPEG-2 Layer 3 MP3 file with a maximum (supported) bitrate of 160 kbps (regardless of the LAME Enc settings) - thus fixing the old 'Can't Open Encoder' error message.
More importantly, note that the final pieces of the updated code for lame_enc didn't make it in time for this public beta, therefore the error message will still appear when trying to transcode eg. a 22.1 Khz 8-bit WAV to anything above 160 kbps mp3. Basically, MPEG-2 Layer 3 is 8-160kbps / 16khz, 22khz & 24khz; MPEG-2.5 L3 is 8-160kbps / 8khz, 11khz, & 12khz; MPEG-1 L3 is 32-320kbps / 32khz, 44khz & 48khz.

RE: New enc_wav.dll
The internal WAV Output encoder (for ripping & transcoding) has been removed and replaced with a new external enc_wav.dll. The ACM options (Convert to Format) have now been (re)implemented as from build 1239.

Report any issues with the updated MusicIP Mix (formerly Predixis MusicMagic) v1.1 plugin at the MusicIP forum, not here.

Known Issues

-CD Burning still doesn't work under Win9x :-(

-Gapless CD playback broken with Sonic again (works fine if using aspi)

-Also check for any known Build 1239 specific issues

* = Fixed internally

good thing i started on the fixes for my plugins with respect to the 'Re: ????? in taskbar with unicode titles' section now wasn't it

Notes on resolving the ??? in the taskbar

Simply put, for the taskbar to work correctly with this and newer versions of Winamp, if you're a plugin developer and you subclass the main winamp window then you need to use the W version of SetWindowLong so that the unicode window proceedure will be preserved.

If you don't or people are using older plugins then the OS will make things revert back to the ansi version of things and as such unicode media will once again show as ???? in the taskbar.

code:
WNDPROC SetWinampWndSubClass(HWND winamp, WNDPROC newproc){ if(IsWindowUnicode(winamp)){ return (WNDPROC)SetWindowLongPtrW(winamp,GWLP_WNDPROC,(LONG_PTR)newproc); } else{ return (WNDPROC)SetWindowLongPtrA(winamp,GWLP_WNDPROC,(LONG_PTR)newproc); } }
As a final note, there may be cases where you need to explictly use CallWindowProcW(..) instead of just using CallWindowProc(..) as defined by your current build settings. This is more of something that support on Win9x may involve if you're even still supporting those OSes (is just a note to bear in mind if you're one of the few silly devs who support those OSes)

Hey guys, just did a clean install, and it did fix the unprotected WMA CD burning on my windows XP laptop (this was my only problem with 5.33). Seems to be humming along quite nicely, but i'll still stay far away from that MusicIP thing, unless there's been significant improvements over Predixis.

hmm. IPv6 support in winamp? what does that mean? what are the benefits?

I thought that would have been an OS/ IP connection issue rather than an application one?

EDIT: Benski's answer concerning my IPv6 question on HA:

quote:
I updated our networking library (http://www.nullsoft.com/free/jnetlib/ - but new version isn't on that site yet), which powers Winamp and many of our other products (including internal AOL stuff). Winamp getting IPv6 support was just a side-effect, but we figured that this might be a good vehicle to test it with, especially on Windows Vista which supports IPv6 out of the box.

It's the one that says Pro. This is only a beta build, and not on the main site.

Thank you for keeping 9x users in mind still when building new versions, thanks.

I'm sorry though but it's still a no go with the sonic engine installed and still does not work right with 9x when you press the Burn button - gives and error and locks up. I have reported this here with all previous versions back through and starting with v5.2.2.600.....For me, when installing the Sonic Engine the last version that Sonic works properly on W98SE for is v5.2.1.497

Here's a screenshot of what happens when I hit the burn button:

If you want a better look at that error I've attached a txt of it:

Hello,

thanks for the new Version with the many of Bugfixes.

But I have a wish for then new Version.

Please make the Size of Option Windows custumizable.

Background of this:

I use the FlyakiteOSX Theme on my Windows XP.
In many Windows of the Winamp are some options not shown.

If it possible, please tell me the way that I can use it or can change the Size of the option window.

Or give it other things that have to change, that the window change the size?

thx

IPv6 Support seems to work fine for listening to MP3 and OGG streams over the internet.

I am able to listen to IPv6 streams mentioned here:

When I look at my router the streams really go through IPv6.

Yeah, a lot of defunct code was stripped out globally, and the Local Media views / queries / searches etc should be quite a bit faster.

@ RHarmsen
Cool. Thanks for the confirmation :-)

scroll function shows not the complete text

Hello

is it possible that the scroll function show the complete right side of the text.
On the picture you can see, that few "pixel" are missing.
It stops by "...(Misc remix)(6:4" and a half of the 8

better:
"...(Misc remix)(6:48) "
(with space at the end)

It used to take Winamp 3 -5 secs to start on a machine of mine, now it starts instantly, HUGE IMPROVEMENT !!!

I also have a 100mhz First-Gen Pentium with 32mb ram running Windows 98, after removing the Modern skins, the Media Library (but not the playlist), some useless plugins(for that machine) and the video support, Winamp Runs flawlessly - thats 6 secs to start, loads a 3000 mp3 m3u list from a remote workgroup computer and plays without a hitch or clank the msec I click that serial mouse button :-)

heres for another great version !!!

since ive been using vista (premium) i have noticed (with every beta/final version released since vista's release) that the live taskbar thumbnail never shows an accurate picture of winamp. i always only have the playlist editor window open, and it always shows the main window only, in the classic skin. many other times it just shows a distorted image or a part of the main window. this is with all of winamp 5.3 if i remember correctly.

Just to mention here, is it just me or the design issues, in the winamp installation it is state my installation is custom over my previous installation(just only unchecked winamp agent) instead a previous. And I'm found it is not different custom and previous installation in down-list menu, but it is auto-detected my installation is custom. It is not happened before this version (I mean 5.33 and above).

adios!!!

Thanks for the new release chaps, but bloody hell, jnetlib.w5s has put on a few pounds - 624k?!

The previous version of jnetlib.w5s (23k) appears to work fine, and as I currently do not have a need for IPv6, I think I'd prefer to keep WinAMP as slimline as possible.

Cheers,
James

I think the new jnetlib also provides support for ssl (https) streams, but I could be wrong (there was an internal ssl version of jnetlib knocking around a while back, maybe Benski can confirm?)

[EDIT]

Yup, I can now confirm that ssl is supported (just uploaded an mp3 to my ssl server, and Winamp 5.34b played it fine) :-)

Yes the extra size is SSL support. That stays out of the final build, though. IPv6 support didn't add any size per se.

in_wave

In the known bug list (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=156839), the in_wave audio support bug (in_wave v3.x doesn't support riff-wav's (ie. mp3 with wav header) or any codecs not supported by libsndfile library (eg. dsp truespeech or aud)) is listed as "fixed in latest internal builds". The problem is still there in 5.34. Although I am content with using DrO's waveform wrapper, I am curious about when you expect for the internal fix to be available in a publicly-available build.

Yeah, it should probably have a different style asterisk to the other entries.

Basically, by 'fixed' it means that it's fixed if you use the in_dshow workaround method instead, because in_dshow plays just about all WAV files.

The only problem with in_dshow is that there's no 24bit output support (a la Prefs > Playback), and transcoding from .wav to .xxx doesn't work (in_dshow doesn't support transcoding). Then again, neither does old in_wave (as used by DrO's waveform wrapper workaround).

Yup, it's a cruddy situation, but the only way it can be fixed once and for all is to write a brand new acm-style in_wave from scratch. Alas, parts of the old in_wave source code were lost somewhere inbetween PP, Justin & co leaving and Benski & co taking over, which was why a new in_wave was quickly knocked up to provide multi-user, 24bit, transcoding, etc support, as well as fixing the 32bit float point distortion bug. The new in_wave however uses the libsndfile library instead of acm, and libsndfile doesn't support (embedded) mp3, dsp-ts, or .aud files.

One day, hopefully we'll get a brand new acm-based in_wave, but in the meantime, you're just gonna have to settle for one of the known workarounds (there's only one Benski, and he's only got one pair of hands) ;-) Anyone found a good cloning machine yet?

IIRC, the jnetlib in the beta of 5.33 was also the same large size, so this wasn't surprising.

So why is SSL in the beta builds but not the final build? (not that it matters to me since I haven't ever seen a stream come from HTTPS before, but I'm curious)

Apparently, and without going into any detail, it's not quite finished yet.

It lacks any kind of config. ssl usually has lots of user interaction with regards to establishing trust. Think of your browser prompting about when certificates are expired, or names dont match, or trusted certs, or or or. basically, that needs doing.

Right now it blanket accepts any ssl credentials and encrypts the stream.

Letters in taskbar

Right-to-left alphabets do scroll funnily. Try a few of Hebrew letters.

Right; hadn't thought of that... but... the three functions of SSL/TLS are to ensure privacy from a snooping man-in-the-middle, integrity from a man-in-the-middle changing the data in-flight, and authenticity. Most people associate SSL/TLS with the first of those three. The second is important on paper but not that much so in real life. A blanket auto-accepting system will still feature the first two of those three. The last one is what protects you from giving your bank account info to some phishing site ran by Nigerians and prevents someone from hijacking DNS to point your bank's website to theirs (if they also hijacked your bank's web servers, then certs won't do you any good). The relevance of the authenticity feature of SSL/TLS is pretty limited: makes lots of sense for banking, shopping, etc. (and even then, studies show that most people auto-accept anyway and ignore whatever warnings come up), but not so much in other contexts. This is why most SSH servers and IM protocols that use TLS don't even bother with certs and why a lot of people use self-signed certs for HTTPS. I'm not seeing how relevant authenticity is in Winamp's context (well, okay, I'm not seeing how SSL in general is relevant in Winamp's context either ) esp. since the web-browsing component of Winamp uses an embedded IE and not jnetlib.

in_mp3 slow to load data

When I enqueue a bunch of MP3s in Winamp, it loads all the items into the playlist and then will start to fetch the file information for each of the items currently visible on the playlist. My playlist window is tall enough that it displays 22 items at a time...

Time it takes to retrieve the info for all 22 items in 5.34: 21 seconds

After replacing in_mp3 with the one from 5.33, the time went down to a more sensible 1.8 seconds--an order of magnitude difference.

This seems to happen only with files that are on mapped network drives (I haven't tested enough to confirm if this is indeed the trigger). This isn't a problem with the network drives themselves because my gigabit LAN is pretty quick and because the problem goes away if in_mp3 is replaced with an older version from 5.33.

Also, Winamp behaves sluggishly--almost non-responsively, but not quite--during the 20 or so seconds of file info loading, though CPU usage remains normal the entire time.

Any chance that these files have non-english letters in the filename?

Nope. All ASCII, nothing above 0x7E.

Wiamp Music playback crashes the player.

Hi,

Approximately every second time I play or switch to a new entry in Winamp Music the player crashes completely. It simply vanishes.

Edit: This is the an "expansion" of the Audioscrobbler plug-in problem I have reposrted here in the forums with 5.33: I am not able to play AOL videos with any Audioscrobbler plug-in installed. In this beta I am not able to play Winamp music either with Audioscrobbler enabled. When I remove this plug-in I can play Winamp Music.

cdysthe: i've just spent the last hour and a half trying to see what/where the fault is happening and i can't. the crash happens in random memory with no reference (that i can find in the debugger) as to faulting module. the problem even happens if i rebuild the AS plugin with everything in it's init(..) disabled - points more like it's the mfc crap it uses.

as such, unless the standalone or the official AS plugin is properly looked at/fixed (assuming the issue is in the dll) or a completely new standalone version is built then there's not a lot which can be done (i'm pissed off with the current standalone version that i've started on something towards the third option but don't know if it'll ever come to fruition).

the only plus side from the wasted time (when i should have been finishing the new jtfe release) is that i found two of my input based plugin's also have some quirks with the videos from the winamp music section (can't believe how much that part sucks - haven't touched it in a year+ and it's dire)

I really apprciate your efforts and understand your frustration. As for now I will just have to choose between some of the on-line content in Winamp and Last.fm scrobbling. I have mentioned it before, but this also happens with the Last.fm installation and the Winamp plug-in it installs. I have posted in the Last.fm forums and e-mailed Last.fm support. Nothing so far.

Personally I have never experienced Winamp crashing in this manner. Reminds me of total segfaulting in Linux: Kaboom, UI gone!

The crashing of audioscrobbler on WMA/WMV streams has been known for some time (about a year now). Hopefully last.fm can fix the problem.
