skinning in progress, comments welcome

Hi,

I'm making a Phillip Boa skin.

Here is what I have so far:
An about 50 layer photoshop document with elements from different CDs, some homemade blue and orange textures and spaceholders for buttons texts and eqbars.

Now I am looking for:

- a way to make some metal looking ornaments for the upper right border.
Does anyone has a tip or know a link to photoshop tutorials (English, German or Dutch) for how to do that?
Should be just a slightly dark metal effect.
I just know how to do plain metal, never made ornaments before.
Or if you have a PSD thats layers would show me how to do that:
My email is zwylle@gmx.net .

- a way to loosen up the upper border of the grass

- any kind of input I can get. In this stadium almost everything is changeable

Thanks alot
zwylle

reminds me of spyamp with that circle on the left.

try to make teh picture and teh EQ bars blend better. those retangles jsut look ugly. also I'd jsut get rid of the OIDVC or whatever it is on teh left also.

lastly the top text i don't like.

Hmm, a bit early to tell... If you can, I would try cutting the bottom of the pic of the guy above the top of the EQ bars. Maybe even try to fade to orange? So that you can actually blend the eq bars with the background. And don't necessarily lose the clutterbar, (because it can be turned off if people don't want to use it) but do make it more subtle. Maybe dots, or just subtler letters.

Yeah.. sorry, almost everything you see is just temporary.

Now for the EQ i had the idea of a wooden fence sitting in water.
I've scetched it in this pic.
This is far from final. I have pretty good workthroughs for the water and wood but it'll take at least a day or 2.
I'm still slow at using Photoshop.

I would like to do the upper frame first though and am desperately looking for information how to make ornamental metal... There must be another way than do it pixel by pixel.

Thanks

Looks like it could be a pretty cool skin

yeah, that text at the top could be way better. At the moment, it's too pixelated. You should give it anti-aliasing and stretch it out horizontally, or if you want to keep the letters so narrow and tall, make it bigger on both x and y axes.

The cbuttons are rather boring, and the shufrep buttons are as well (plus they are very small, and the REP is very hard to see).I'm not sure who the guy is, or how faithful you want to be to the theme, etc. but you could probably put all sorts of stuff in the cbuttons: a teepee, birds, instects, road signs, etc. etc.

That big cut-off circle shape you have is interesting. Perhaps try making everything inside it somewhat different to everything else (eg. lighter, darker, higher contrast, higher saturation, or a slightly different colour)

The fence still looks a bit rough.

I don't like the star you put over his chest. Also, line up the CButtons and give them fancy symbols. Those symbols are too old.

Just started!
All buttons are spaceholder, the Fence is just a scetch.
The text on top is from a downloaded pic, I'm going to scan the original cover to get a better quality.

Basiscally it's all just the layout.

The guy is Phillip Boa.
The star on his chest is on the original cover, My plan is to integrate REPEAT in this star, right now theres just a repeat spaceholder on top of it, so it looks especially ugly.

It is planned to be a pure Phillip Boa skin. I'm making it for my best fiend, who is a huge Boa fan.
He is kinda popular in Germany, but not really.. most of his stuff is not mainstream.

Glad there was noone who said that the whole layout it is crap, wasnt sure about that.
I'm going into my studies now to find out how to make the wanted metal frame.
Thanks for your comments so far

The female singer in the Video is Pia, they split up a couple of years ago and he made some CDs without her voice.. Now they are back together, yippie..

Think I am about ready to transfer it to the skin files.
I really want to start working on the buttons now.
The border still bugs me and there is some more work to be done on the symbol in the EQ and the left side of the main window.
It should be possible to do that with the windows apart though.

How do you like the sky and water?

I like the sky, and the water is very nice. As for the fence, you're going to make sure that the top part of the fence is /above/ the actual EQ bars, so that there's no annoying glitch when you bring the slider to the top, right? Just checking. Speaking of the fence, how complete is it? The bars could probably be connected by some horizontal planks behind them, and I would maybe continue the fence to the outsides of the bars, you know? So it's not just 11 fence-planks hanging around. I don't know if you were planning to do that already or not, maybe I'm just putting too much thought into it.

The top of the planks is above the sliders, that was one of my concerns too, when I was working on it I thought about connecting the bars, but not making additional planks. The EQ may get too dark. Think its easier to work on that when the pic already transfered to the EQ and I have the buttons and maybe some plant style bar animations.

Wow, zwylle, I liked the idea all along, but your execution is fantastic. That water is perfect. It could do with a little better merging with the grass... you're allowed a small mud bank to merge them The fence looks good but it good do with some extra posts. Maybe one on each side which isn't so straight or perhaps one which has broken floating about in the water. That would be neat.. it'd make it more realistic. The cross thing looks a bit weird as it goes over the magnifying glass/circle thing which makes that look lame.

new screenie

No dirt yet, but some buttons, sliders text and numbers.
Repeat button and the symbol in the EQ inner need some more work, so does the pic in the left of main.

So far I have spent more time reading tutorials than actually drawing pictures, weird.

Any ideas for the playlist?
I was thinking about going with a rock theme.

I like the top-right and bottom-left corners

The repeat button is very hard to see. Perhaps make it a lighter grey than the star.

the EQ looks pretty good, though reminds me very much of dimichan's Cemetary Gates.

From the looks of the screenshot, the flowers in the volume and balance don't really fit in.

This is really gorgeous so far, looking forward to seeing how it comes along here...
only thing I see is what SW already said as far as the vol and bal not quite fitting, the rest all integrate with the landscape, but the flowers there just kind of float in midair - maybe something like a butterfly or bird?

I have downloaded Cemetary Gates to see what you mean, Stillwater.
Actually the only thing the 2 EQs have in common is that there is some kind of fence integrated in the landscape.
Layout and animations are completely different, so I have just decided not to worry about it.
There are only so many ways to integrate an EQ especially in a bright picture. As well you could say every HiFi EQ reminds you to some other, or most of your EQs look the same as they are usually based on round 2d buttons.

Georgious? ooh .. my female hormones must have kicked in there
I'll try to make it a little less flowery, hehe.
Volume/Balance is a real bitch here, even after weeks staring at it I can't think of anything that would look good but not distract too much from the picture.
I was compromizing with this solution, but as you both pointed it out, I started playing around with it again.
Well.. I told my friend the skin would be done around christmas, hope I didn't promise too much there, lol.

Thanks for your replies

I think a realistic cloud would be a great volume bar, but I don't know how difficult that would be to make. Great skin by the way, that EQ looks really good. It's funny to think about how tiny that fence is compared to the guy tho...

wow this skin just keeps getting better. please do not be offended when i say i didn't like it that much in the beginning. especially since i love it now. two suggestions:

1. Cleanup was right when he said get rid of the star over his chest.

2. This skin looks all nature-like. However, the EQ on/auto buttons IMO are way too modern for it. my eyes are drawn right to them. maybe you could make it a vine or a piece of the fence or something. i'm not really sure what you should do with it. just do a little something.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

I did some work on the star/repeat and finished the EQ bars.

After a creative break I am still struggling with volume, posbar and preset
Balance/volume will pobably become like on the image, just with higher contrast and the grey parts brushed up a little.

I was thinking about a nature thing like cloud or bird for the volume, but then again I like the contrast of nature and technical looking things, a theme to be found on many of the guy's CD covers.

Does the star look ok now?
Repeat is animated and turns when being pressed.

Next time I'll load up a wsz.
