Desert sand? Yes. Not what I'd call dirt, but it looks like a good desert sand.

What kind of thing are you using this for, out of curiosity? Some kind of desert skin?

it looks too blurred to be sand to me (and possibly a bit too low in saturation)

You're getting there. It needs to be fine, but not quite as much contrast between grains as you have at the moment, IMHO.

Maybe if you take the one you have with higher contrast and put another almost transparent layer over it, that is using the cloud effect. Would give it a more random look.

Probably similar stuff. Hardpan looks like what happens when mud dries, except dustier. Solid dirt with a few cracks running through it.

The image there looks like sandpaper.

If you're doing this as a means to hone your photoshop skills, then all's well.

But if you're just doing this because you want your skin's background to look like sand, then why bother? go to Google image search and find yourself a beautiful photo-quality texture of sand that even the most skilled Photoshopper wouldn't be able to equal, and build your skin from that.

db- well i had originally done just that. but that was when it was going to be dirt. now that ive done more of the other parts i think desert will work better. thanks everyone for commenting and ill be sure to post a screenshot as soon as enough of this skin is done to merit it.

i had originally avoided doing that because i thought you had to give some sort of credit to the original artist. is this true?

It's hard to say whether stealing textures from Google is stealing. I suppose strictly it is. But then, why does the Image Search exist if not to use other peoples photos/images? If you want to be a good little person, try looking at free stock photo sites, but you'll never find what you want as easily as with Google.

well i did take a sand texture from google. and while i was at it i took a snow texture too.

maybe ill just put something in the readme file that says taken from google or something like that. i found that half the time its hard to figure out the original artist even if you wanted to.

lol luigi if its a game skin i think you have a legitimite excuse

It's a breach of copyright as much as anything else. Just like any skin with a picture of a movie star, singer, band, or a skin with someone's artwork, or a hifi skin with a brand's logo. They are probably all more substantial breaches of copyright than what you're doing, which is taking a photo of sand -such a generic thing that it's probably unlikely that someone would even recognise it as their photo, let alone care that you've used it.

Probably something like half of the skins in the database breach copyright laws. However, the general philosophy is that since skins are such insignificant, non-profit, things, no one would care - and that they might - if anything - even be flattered that you wanted to grace winamp with their artwork, picture, etc. Copyright becomes serious when you start making money from other people's work, robbing them of royalties - or start claiming that it is your own work, robbing them of the credit they deserve.

When I use a photo or picture in a skin, I always give credit where it's due and give appropriate links in my readme, mbinner, and/or the description that appears at the skin site.

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

Fill your canvas with your desired colour, preferable a dark colour. Make a new layer over top.
Grab the polygonal lasso tool and just make a random shape along the top (you can still see a basic shape in my example). Fill it with white.
Now go Image->Rotate Canvas->90º CW. Now go Filter->Stylize->Wind [Method:Wind, Direction:From the Right]. Repeat (Ctrl+F). Now go Image->Rotate Canvas->90º CCW.
Free transform (Ctrl+T) and drag the bottom up to make the icicles shorter (optional).
Go Filter->Noise->Add Noise [Amount: 3.5%, Distribution: Gaussian, Monochromatic].
Add an outer glow with the settings shown in the first window in the attachment. Make a new layer, and merge with the icicle layer (Ctrl+E).
Bevel and emboss with the settings in the second window on the attachment, and texture with the third.
Finally, add a color overlay with the colour #DAEBFF, opacity 16%.

lol, you didn't say that the dirt you wanted was going to be seen from bird's eye view. the sand you have looks like it's being viewed from about 50cm away, because it feels like you can see the individual grains, whereas it should look like it's some 50 metres away.

Anyway, interesting skin , though I'm wondering where it's going. At the moment, it has a strange mixture of wildly differnt viewing angles and distances, but that may be your intention. I think those gradient-poles should be made shinier somehow.

Since you've made the poles and roads join up in MAIn, EQ and PL, you should also make the surfaces (asfalt+sand+?) join up more realistically.

StillWater - maybe ill put a divider like on a highway between the windows so its not asphalt one pixel and sand the next. As for the sand, i'm not really sure what to do with it. theres still something this skin needs to make it great instead of just ok.

Luigi- I'll try my best but progress will be slow as school is starting tomorrow for me.

Sorry Mr. Jones hehe

and before anyone says it i realize that the green thing in the playlist looks kinda stupid but i had to put something in there because of the damn text. actually because of the road, the whole damn playlist was a bitch

You could make those green areas in the PL into signs - they are sitting right next to a stretch of road, after all.

Somehow this skin reminds me of the game mikro machines.
I like the main window.

I don't think the 'gradient polls' should be shinier. They look pretty much like the polls on the streets here, except that the polls on the street are usually partially covered with black dirt.
What is your intention with the wood like parts in the EQ? They look like not finished yet.

I would merge the green parts of the playlist and make one big sign of it like the viscolor/number sign.
If the street on the bottom of the playlist would be a little lower, the playlist stacks could be parking lots or merging streets.
What is the playlist texture supposed to be?

Great idea and I go with Luigi: 'this better be good'
