If they are distributing music that hasn't been authorized to sell they aren't a legal music service.

yes, I see that.

But, you know, what I liked most about allofmp3 was not the price, no, it was the way they let the customer chose in what format the music was distributed in many cases. My attitude towards bying anything except lossless or LAME --alt-preset standard/extreme encoded mp3 is very negative.

KarmaDownload are pretty good. I feel obliged to plug them since they have a custom playlist based upon a gig that I helped organise and run a wee while back.

Also upstarts MPeria look like they could be worth a look-in.

A lot of these sites cater largely to new or unsigned bands, but they do tend to incorporate the very best of music around these days despite this. Don't bow to labels!

Also, if free music's your thing, check out the Untapped Talent MP3 o' the Week. Every week. Damn you all. And download Amplifico tracks from their website, since they rock something untrue (although the first EP doesn't really show them at their full amazing-ness, the second one is due out soon).

Away from plugs, yeah, choosing a format is a fantastic thing to be able to do with a music website. So many online music services don't really understand the fact that restrictions on music files aren't really what the customer wants - they want their own way with the files.
