Winamp 5.3.5.1305 causes access violations in Windows Vista

When I play audio files in Winamp while using Windows Vista, I get an error that resembles the following (no blue screen but Winamp closes unexpectedly) "ACCESS_VIOLATION c0000005 (0xc0000005) in dsound.dll. The problem has a report that was sent to Microsoft. It states:

sounds like you have problems with your soundcard drivers.

read our forum stickys on how to do a clean re-install along with the driver update(don't use windows update as the drivers there are usually old and useless)
