new Windows 7 desktop

My Vista Dell is dead and I have to get a new Windows 7 desktop. SAM will be the only software running on it. I have a PAL script, PHP requests (MySQL), and 5,000 tracks. What kind of minimum specs should I be looking for? I don't need some $5,000 gamer PC!

Windows 7 audio makes orphans cry

you asked for the "minimum" ... the specs I posted were what I used to use without issue

also, Windows 7 think requires 1GB minimum RAM anyway

Dell 620, HP Pavillion Slimline, or HP Pavillion P6? There is also Asus, which I've never heard of. Spacial is telling me SAM requires minimum 2G RAM.

Pick of the bunch

The above is from personal experience - Australian Dell and HP may be worse than in your part of the world

really? Spacial joining the "bloatware" wagon - if that's the case, then you need 4GB RAM (never trust minimum specs if you want trouble free streaming)

Per spacial's page on minimum specs:

http://support.spacialaudio.com/wiki...m_Requirements

Not sure where you are getting the 2GB from, that is certainly not true.

Windows 7 works perfectly with SAM. You would need around 2 GB RAM so that SAM works without crashing.

I have run two instances of SAM on one machine with 2GB of RAM. I am not sure where he gets that idea. Obviously the more RAM the better, but to say that it is necessary is a stretch.

that link looks outdated (This page was last modified on 31 January 2008, at 19:39.) - no mention of windows 7, and Vista is not supported at all according to that

http://spacial.com/help-center/sam-b...am-broadcaster - that's more up to date

oh, and for windows 7 64-bit, microsofts minimum requirement is 2GB I believe

You're safe with Windows XP, especially if you're running your own MySQL server on a different machine for SAM to connect to and use. If you absolutely have to get a Windows 7 machine from off the shelf then I would recommend upgrading it to Windows XP the moment you take it home. That suggestion may not be practical (buying a full copy of Windows XP at the same time as the computer) but it would very probably be worth it on just bypassing all the potential audio headaches of Vista/7.

I was able to get the trial version of SAM working ok on my little stock Acer ApsireOne notebook with a local MySQL (for Windows) server, and sc_serv + sc_trans, running on it at the same time.

It is pretty hard to buy a machine today that is not able to run SAM without breaking a sweat.
More RAM is always good, but not required. SAM hovers way below <100MB on average.

I recommend if you gonna get an HP to get the Elite series and one that has 8GB of RAM. If you run 8GB you can run SAM, Download music from iTunes what you need to ad more music for your station and never break a sweat. You can even review music on MOG too for future purchases for your station and the station will run without any hick up. Remember SAM 4.9.2 is BUGGY so don't run that version stay with 4.9.1 or Upgrade to 4.9.4 if you MUST have the latest version. I've learned through plenty of experience that the faster the processor and the quad core is a recommended processor for anyone running a station. I've even made ID's for my station while still running SAM and never a hitch. If I have a hitch its usually because Time Warner is throttling their Upload speed and that you can fix by using BTGuard.

Often too many people try and run strip down computers and wonder why their station skips and otherwise slows down when an event is executed in SAM.
