Something odd I notice very often...

There seems to be a lot of diehard Soundblaster and Audigy users that don't like Bose (more that I've talked to in real life than I've seen here). This just seems ironic, as both are audio components of about equal quality.

Converting your music from digital to analog with an Audigy 2 adapter, but insisting on speakers better than Bose is like saying a Corvette is not enough car to justify the use of Pirelli P-Zero tires. Neither products are the best in the world, but both are far from the worst.

If Bose products aren't good enough for your needs - and you use B+W, or Martin Logan, etc. - then you'd better be using an $800 Terratec audio card to justify your product balance. If you're not, then you're putting $50 Sears tires on your Porsche.

My two cents...

The quality differences between speakers are far bigger than those between soundcards though.

If it's just about money you'd be right, otherwise you should replace $800 Terratec with $20 Chaintech.

I don't see the use of a $800 soundcard anyway, unless you use it for recording. For serious listening, I just don't use my computer. If I would have an $800 soundcard, I think I would start to hear the bad quality of a lot of files. You can go lossless, but (almost) only when you rip from cd, which means you have the cd. When I want to do serious listening and have the cd, I put the cd in my cd player of course.

About Bose, I just don't like the whole image. Their pro range is ok I believe, but expensive for what you get.

I do use my computer (pretty much exclusively), but my soundcard cost 'only' €88. It already has a much better frequency range and far lower distortion than any loudspeaker no matter how expensive.

What do you mean by "it already has a much better frequency range and far lower distortion than any loudspeaker"? Frequency range and distortion tell little about how a set sounds, and how can you compare a soundcard to a loudspeaker?

I mean: that soundcard already affects the overall sound less than any loudspeaker.

All I really care about is a speaker system that won't squeak when the bass is heavy, etc.

I'm easy

That's a great card, indeed.
