Winamp crashes after clicking "View file info"

Every time I right-click on an MP3 file in Winamp and then click "View file info" on the menu, Winamp crashes.
I de-installed it and re-installed but it doesn't help. It keeps crashing. It started to do this a week or two ago. Until then everything was hunky dory.
Is there any medicine for that condition?

and if it still happens after making sure your ver is latest and fully patched, upload to us a link to one of the files that causes the issue.

Here's one of them:

What do you mean by patched? Do I have to add some patch to my already installed WinAmp?

Did you look at and read the page provided by the link in post #2 above? It should make clear what "patched" means. What is the version number of the "in_mp3.dll" file in your installation?

If it is not v4.103, then download and run the appropriate patched installer. You don't have to remove your current installation, the patched installer's automatic mode will replace or remove what needs to be changed..

I installed the file
Winamp 5.666 Full (US English version)
from the site
http://meggamusic.co.uk/winamp/Winamp_Download.htm
Is this enough or do I have to install anything else?

The file version of my in_mp3.dll file is 4.103.0.0

I can't reproduce any crash with your sample file, though that's probably because I'm using a newer internal build where this bug is fixed.

At a guess, the crash is happening due to the presence of 0x0 embedded art in the tags.

You could try removing that art with e.g. mp3tag (see screenshot)
or hope and pray that I decide to publicly release Winamp 5.8 beta asap....

@DJ Egg,
People should check their files for 'bad' metadata, but it's great to hear that v5.8 better handles such issues.

@Iomhar,
I apologize for my snarky tone in post #7 above.

@MrSinatra,
What version of in_mp3.dll are you using?

embedded art issues strike again. actually, i think i reported a similar issue while DrO was still working on it, prob in the bug forum.

we shouldn't jump to conclusions however. how do we know the metadata is "bad"? true, mp3tag doesn't see the image, but is that proof? is winamp crashing b/c of it proof?

mp3tag does NOT report the metadata as bad, (and i have seen it do so with other files from time to time), it just doesn't show the art. it could just be an unconventional or incomplete implementation.

meanwhile, windows explorer DOES show the art (win7) in the bottom left corner when u highlight the file.

i am using the same dll i have used for years now, 105. please, tell me again about how i was "TOLD" not to use it! ha.

Then your comment in post #5 above is misleading. Your "patched" version is not what the patched installers provide.

That's why I put single quotes around the word. Does MP3Val report any issues with the file? It is known that Winamp has issues with certain file structures that other media players don't. Using apps like MP3Val or MP3Diags to check mp3s for structural 'errors' before using them with Winamp (and other apps for other formats) should be part of everyone's vetting practices.

i disagree. at that point, it was still not yet established if his was patched in ANY way or not, and we needed to know that first, before any other next steps could be taken.

once we saw it was patched, then it was a matter of digging deeper into the file and the dll, as egg did.

what is misleading is to say the metadata in the file is "bad." i see no proof that is so. mp3val found no errors, but i suspect this case is one very similar to one i reported, where winamp crashed on art not being how it expected it to be, which means winamp is too fault intolerant. i suspect that report made its way to DrO who fixed it in the internal release egg has now.

Yes, I noticed how Windows Explorer does display the art (for the mp3 file).

When using mp3tag to extract the art...
IrfanView reports: Decode error! Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x10 0x4a
If I save it with no extension, IrfanView then reports that the file is a JPG with the wrong extension

So it's e.g. some corrupt EXIF/Header data which causes programs like mp3tag, Winamp, IrfanView, photo gallery, paint, etc. not to be able to read the image, whereas Windows Explorer isn't affected and can somehow still read it when it's embedded in the mp3.... hmmm....

And more importantly, the crash is fixed for the next Winamp release....

That's a big surprise.

Using the word 'suspect' instead of 'bad' may have been more to your liking. Whatever, your point and mine have been made.

at this point its only speculation, but i know that DrO liked to have something not work on purpose, if it was mislabeled. so winamp wouldn't show art for a jpg if it was really a bmp, or wouldn't play a m4a if it was really a acc (or whatever the correct examples are). i suggested that making winamp more fault tolerant would be better (by examining the file headers if the extensions were wrong) but he disagreed. such is life.

but in strange cases, where things are embedded and a few cards short of a full deck in their implementation, it doesn't surprise me that crashes could happen as a result. like i said, i recall similar bugs i reported in the past, and i think DrO accounted for them prior to his untimely departure.
