As I said before, maybe not here, 2.95 will never be released - it'll go straight to v5.

Oh please. If you think it's being released on the first of november you've got another thing coming. It will be ABOUT November sometime. Ish. Maybe. We don't know. So don't ask.

Don't ask... funny, I think I've seen them say that about a hundred thousand times now, and yet we continue to ask... could it be because we've all grown to love Winamp over the last few years, perchance? Beats me.

Winamp 5 is coming along good. Looks like the big launch date is pushed to
early November. This is taking forever. But at least it'll give us time to
make the it pretty solid. Good times. While they last.

The world is made of conflicts: good and evil, order and chaos, light and dark, hot and cold. All are essential to life. None can prevail for any length of time, or life will fail. In the end, the best any can hope for is balance.

A developer's diary would surely keep down the number of questions and keep us all in suspence. (Hey I know I'd check every day.)

I try to act as the developers' diary, but usually fail miserably. Suffice to say we're in internal beta now. Coming along nicely.

Edit: Thanks for the 'update' anyway, Russ.

i dunno i am somewhat compelled to wait for the final version of winamp5, that being said i like they way winamp3 developed i also like the fact that the powers that be at winamp let us see the development by releasing all the alphas and betas but hey thats just my opinion
for what its worth

Once the Main issues are aside, Like the ones EVERYone will report on the forums, I assume a public beta will be released?

But what do I know.

I'm pretty sure there will be no public beta, but if Winamp 5's preliminary release date is 9 Nov, eh let's wait.

(but hey the leaked alpha worked pretty well too, I saw a few bugs but nothing that prevented me from using it to get away from the irritating shuffle-bug, which does makes me wonder why the internal V2.95 was never released, since it was fixed in that version already.)

FREe

Winamp has always been utterly and completely free (except for a brief period) but i thought we were past that now. It seems very un-winamp-ish to ask for money. Is this from AOL or did the guys at winamp all of a sudden decide they need more money. All i know is that its annoying lol... I really hope that doesn't show up in the final version. If it does i might be stuck using my 2.95 instead of the newest version. Even though i don't use the ripping feature it would just bother me to have to look at the winamp pro tab in preference and see "Not registered" every time! Also there is a small error that I found in the beta. In the Credits it says Mikmod Plugin instead of Milkmod plugin

I don't need Winamp to ripp or burn cds, but I don't want to see a sharware tab on top of preferences.

AOL bought Netscape, now Netscape is dead.

AOL bought ICQ, now we have big banners on bottom of every message window.

AOL bought Nullsoft, now Winamp is shareware again?

All people who paid for the Winamp sharware version don't get an upgrade option?

I believe, there will be more features only for Winamp Pro.

Sorry, I can't understand that.
I am a big Winamp fan and user for years, I have respect for the work you do, but I don't agree with the profit.

So, when it's officially released, you download the 100% free Standard version, instead of the Pro version. End of matter.

I don't see anyone ever needing Pro. All the extra shit it offers everyone already achieves by using superior free solutions. Such as LAME, Exact Audio Copy, etc. So the "cost" for Pro is really just a way to profit off of lazy folks. Therefore, there should be no bitching in the future regarding Pro. If Nullsoft suckers in people who pay, more power to them. But I think the vast majority of Winamp users know better.

And what's the deal with the pic from the Sonique forums? Is that the new default skin? It looks like Windows Media Player and MMD3 has a lovechild. I like it though, whatever it is.

Okay stop whining and be content with the fully functional free version? Go rip with EAC and Lame - I do that too, but I'll happily use 5.0 Standard to play them with.

DJ Egg, thanks for reply.

A standard version, without winamp pro tab in the preferences is ok
