You go to work and everybody asks about how to download music or fixing their computer.

I like that though. I get to see the pretty girls that I work with outside of work.

You lose an erection because virus hacked your PC ;P.

I'd oil my fans, but then I'd have to turn my computer off.

What are the literal dimensions of a pixel, isn't it subjective based on the the ratio of pixels to screen size? Or are we talking the physical pixels of the monitor, all those little dots? But even those change in size, get up real close to an old school TV and have a look at all the RGBness.

Ahem, fridge? It doesn't need defraging, just beer... (...when you take pictures of random things in your room to post on forums?)

He was making a joke. . .

You're correct that a pixel doesn't translate into an SI unit of length.

In Arcsoft Photostudio I can create a new image with width/height defined in inches/centimeters. According to that, an inch is 200 pixels. a centimeter is 79px. Making the nearest fish & chip shop to me roughly 6320000px away from me, according to the distence as defined by google maps...

That would also make the distance to PulseDrivers nearest store equivalent to 274 trips around the equator.

Let me guess, that's because Arcsoft Fotostudio's default resolution is 200dpi?
(which is a bit low for photos)

Um, yes, in my defense I've never actually printed a photo in my life... So I guess 'pixel' pretty much just means 'dot'?

[edit] oh wow, until just then I saw your avatar as a wierd face with extended pursed lips coming out of it's left, sorta like a cartoonish 'oooooo'... now I see it's just.. not that.[/edit]

An image scanned at 600 dots per inch has square pixels, but images that are created on computer monitors sometimes don't have square pixels so the aspect ratio needs to be stored in the images so that they will display correctly.

In a PNG file, that's the pHYs chunk. It can be a problem with JPEG and BMP because square pixels are mandated and viewer software figures out what a square pixel picture should look like on a non-square pixel display. Some old software suffers because it has the old fashioned idea that pixels are always square.

For example 1280X1024 isn't square pixels. 800X600 is.

Shouldn't the the pixels on newer LCD monitors have square pixels? They have a fixed native resolution, meaning their 'pixels' are the same size no matter what resolution your running at. I kinda thought that was the whole point of DVI/HDMI, the 'trueness' of image, the 'dialog' between display adapter and imaging surface.
I certainly see your point for CRT's though, damn they were a bitch...

The pixels are square, but that doesn't mean that they can't represent pixels that aren't. For example DVD's are 720X480 (1.5), but they are never square pixels, either being 16:9 (1.77) or 4:3 (1.25).

Pixels are just samples. Like in audio which has a property known as the sample rate, images have a similar one known as dpi--dots per inch. This is what connects an array of samples to physical dimensions.

DVDs could be square pixel, it is a valid value for the aspect ratio flag.

It used to be fairly common (most obvious example: Apple Lisa) but nowadays (on computers) it only happens anymore if you select the wrong resolution.

For example, setting 1280X1024 resolution on a 4:3 screen produces non-square pixels. As does setting 800X600 on 5:4 or widescreen one.

Have you ever seen a DVD that was? I do think 3:2 might be legal, but I don't think I've seen it.

No, I have never seen it because although 1:1 is valid for the aspect ratio, I recall that DVDs do not allow a frame size that would lead to a 4:3 or 16:9 picture which makes this somewhat pointless.

I should have been clearer and said that "DVDs could be", or it is allowed.

look at it this way ted, a non-derailed thread is plain boring, theres so much you can say about 1 thing, look at the longest most popular threads here (not including the counting threads obviously), they are 100% derailed, mostly on the first page already, it keeps the converstaion going...

on the better days of this forum, when winamp was phasing from 2 to 3, there was not a single thread that didnt get somewhat derailed or just plain "crashed" by constant jokers who lurked around, like biz... chev... umm.. rocker... and many others (too vague), i guess that many died, or got disconnected due to payment issues, thats why theres not much traffic here, sad ... i miss those days

Or that now in the ipod age there are many who haven't even heard of winamp, blindly using their itunes... plus winamp 2&3 was more fun to talk about, and skinning them was new, now it's all just not as interesting. Recently I came across cPro; I remember back when the discussion was still 'but I'm a good winamp 2 skinner, I just can't code...', now theres an answer. Never really saw that coming actually despite the concept being talked about, but I was quite pessimistic back then. Personally, theres only so much caring I can do about the LOOK of something that sits in the background while I LISTEN to it . But back then it was fun, and there were some real creative types around.

Oh and the pixels thing: good to know I can learn so much from just pondering silly thoughts, cheers guys . I always assumed pixels were square, non square pixels don't really make sense, oh well.

good points there paul, i'd really like an ipod myself, but it will be useless to me because i never store enough songs to justify having this, its like buying a supercar to drive your kid to school (ok, not the same concept, but you understand me, right?)

plus that i'm a PC enthusiast, i have nothing against apple.. their products are sleek and functional, i'm just used to using a PC

[edit] ofcourse there is a solution for guys like me, stick players (usb flash drive players), but the last one i used, i trashed, dont know why... dont have sentimental value for those things, but its also true to almost anything electronic i get, i get tired of them pretty soon and start to break them apart piece by piece... its a disorder of mine

If I did buy an ipod it would only be to run it on an alternative firmware so I could listen to flac on the move. Actually I'd be happy with any large size player that could play flac. But I already have zen stone plus, it's not that hard to downgrade flac to mp3, and I don't listen to music on the go enough to justify spending the money. I've been trying to think of a way to justify buying a PDA, since it could do a lot of stuff besides play music, but again I don't need it.

I remember the first USB mp3 player I bought, it cost over twice as much as my zen stone plus at the time of purchase, held a mere 256MB, Had no display, and the dustcover for the USB connection broke way too easily. It was high technology at the time . Guess thats why winamp was so fricken awesome back then.
I still have an mp3 cd player floating around in my closet somewhere.

I don't know why anyone would buy an ipod either. MP3 players are cheap and did you really need to take your entire CD collection with you? I have an RCA Lyra that I paid $40 for... takes SD cards like my camera.. 50 hours off a AAA battery... FM radio.. will record FM radio.

My brother has has dismal luck with his ipod. I think what you want here is solid state. The drives keep going out on the ipod. My Lyra has taken a couple of 20mph... flying off the bike incidents and has some minor scratches. An ipod would never take that. My bro's ipod has never seen anything tougher than sitting on a treadmill during a workout. Zzzzt!

flac on the move.
I like flac, but MP3 is almost as good at 256kbps and it works on anything. Burn a disc for the car.... mp3 player... dvd player.... I really wish flac was the defacto standard instead of mp3, but I gave up ripping to flac because it's just too inconvenient.

Don't forget though, ipods are available in solid state. I have a several year old 4GB ipod nano that has been relatively failsafe. I have never touched iTunes with it, nor will I bother trying.

I don't mind derailing threads really. I should admit that I am one of the people most guilty of the crime. I was just posting my thought to the original thread topic, saying I'm spending far too much time on the PC when I'm posting even when I have nothing really meaningful to say.
