Vandalism

We keep one of our cars in the driveway, and the other on the street. We're not the only people in our neighborhood who do that. Anyway, one day I walk out to the car on the road, and there is GUM, lots of it, on the sideview mirror and above our left windshield wiper. Lovely. So THEN, a couple weeks later, Chris is walking out and sees something in his tailpipe. Someone has ripped a piece of paper up and shoved the pieces into our exhaust pipe. They were a little bit charred, so they may have been there a while.

Now, a couple days ago, we looked at the passenger side of the car (facing away from the road) and it looks like it's been keyed, but not down to the metal, just through the paint. It's a black car, so we have this 6-foot white line running down the side now. We don't know if that happened while it was parked here, or if we were somewhere else, or what.

We know a lot of kids walk by on their way to and from school. The piece of paper looked like it had a teenage girl's handwriting on it.

We have a garage, but we keep our ping-pong table, recyclables, and lawnmower in there; plus the garage door is REALLY loud so we try not to use it (we're in a duplex). And there's no more room really for another car in our driveway; especially since it's on a hill and the parking brake for the (now damaged) black car is shot.

What would YOU do? Sorry for the long post, but this is starting to upset me.

I personally would phone my local police station and see what they could offer in terms of advice.

My girlfriends Dad would stay up all day and night outside, baseball bat in hand, and smash anyone who touched the car just in case it was them.

Attach your car with some form of auto-defence mechanism.

Failing that, add an alarm or one of those cool "Please step away from the car" warnings.

Well, it's a '91 and it'll probably be the first car we trade in, so we don't want to add a lot of stuff to it. Plus, one or the other or both of us are usually gone for work, so wouldn't that be fun to have that go off for hours on end...

Sit, wait, drag them into the garage and beat them until they shit themselves.

Failing that, surely if you live in a built up area, somebody had to see who did it. The fact taht they are probably kids (gum and paper) means that they don't live too far away. Find out who they are and contact their parents.

If they are older (18+), a baseball bat to the knees is called for, because they deserve nothing less.

[edit]Looks like me and Bilbo's girlfriends dad both share the same sentiments.

Solution at home two years ago when somebody tried to steal our car was a shotgun - with a cartridge filled with rock salt instead of pellets. The salt embeds itself under the targets skin and burns like hell for a few weeks until it eventually dissolves.

not really. If some asshole decides to screw with something that I worked hard to pay for, then the f**king b@stard deserves everything he gets, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, some fucker keyed my car once on two consecutive days.

The police's response was that they're too busy catching motorists speeding instead of real criminals, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.

On the third day I waited in the house of a relative where I was parking the car, with a large wooden mallet. Sadly, the perpetrator didn't turn up, and there's been no trouble since.

[17:40] <ethan_h> the best thing you can do is watch, figure out who one of the kids are. You don't need to know them all. Find them when they are on their own, say in the shop, grab them by the arm and whisper in their ear that you will rip his/her fucking arm from its socket if you so much as see them near your car again
[17:40] <ethan_h> then walk away as if nothing had happened....

stay up all night, find out who does it, follow them home, then walk along the road, scooping dog muck into a bag, and return to their home, splashing liberal amounts over the windshield, door handles, and on the bonet

Wouldn't vandalism be considered a 'quality-of-life' crime? They usually aren't given as much priority as other crimes are.

depends i suppose.
some simple annoyances include paintballing homes, teepeeing, or stealing garden gnomes under the GLF motto. i'm guilty of those three.
there's moderate things like breaking windows, keying cars, some graffiti.
then you go to the extremes like CNN's chairman, ted turner. i.e. he painted swastikas and threats on Jewish student dorms' at brown university.

I say you stay up all night and find out who it is, then beat the shit out of them. that failing(or being illegal in your area), get a can of silicone spray, and liberaly spray all hinges/joints on your garage door(there are alot of them, and don't forget the wheels, and the wheel track), but only spray the door itself. wait 24 hrs, and the door should be much quieter. then, park your car inside to avoid furure problems.

that pit bull would have to have one helluva big mouth to bite the face, ass and crotch at the same time.

I'd wire the car to the house's 220 line...next asshole with a key will be easy to find.
Seems you have run afoul of bored children who fancy themselves ruffians.
If you lived here, I'd suggest you wait in the bushes with a 12 guage full of rocksalt and liberaly sprinkle their arses as they elude capture.
If none of these solutions appeal to you a conversation with the local police department is in order since monetary damages are mounting.
Unless you are prepared to fully see it through, surprising them in the act is ill-advised, fun factor notwithstanding.
(the alarm was a good idea too, cheap and easy!)

At that rate, you might as well get a pet T-Rex...
