Mobile Gaming..

Quote:
People are going to be spending millions of pounds to play games on their mobiles by next year, say experts.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3182031.stm

or so they reckon..

Do you "game on" with your mobile, are you likely to in the future?

Personally not me, phone is for phoning, handheld console is for gaming.

I can just see it now, my car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, I reach in to get my mobile phone to call for help, only to find the battery is fucked cos I was playing doom on it last night.

Nah, mobile gaming not for me, altho there was that time I was stuck in the lift at work for an hour and I played Nokia snake to help pass the time...

Nope, all I do is play on Naval Fleet (Ericsson's rip-off of Battleships) whilst waiting for a bus. Wouldn't pay for any mobile games. Even though a GBA-sp looks the business, I haven't the time for it.

Snake, or any other built-in game is fine for passing time in particular situations. like Merlin I'm not that inclined to go out and buy games for my mobile

If you really want to play games on the move get a GBA

i vote for none. because...

against phones...........

a) i dont have small enough thumbs
b) most of the games that are interesting, you have to buy as a upgrade
c) i dont have a good enough phone, and buying one just for games is lame
d) until u can play a game like halo on a phone, i'm not gonna bother.
e) snake (what is up with that dumbass game????)

against game boys......

a) the graphics are shite
b) you have this really annoying sound things. give me a fucking migrane
c) stupid crappy characters like mario, warrio, sonic, pokemon, the list goes on
d) i hate nintendo, and every thing made by them. if sony released a hand held, i might, (and thats a big might) be interested. maybe.

mods: make a decision on whether or not to move this to the bitch list

I wish all the phone manufacturers would take the games off of their phones. I have a phone for talking. I've got a GBAsp for gaming. Gameing on a phone is rediculous.

I voted for "None of the above, portable gaming blows" because I hardly play games at all. I do have got a GameBoy Classic (Zelda pwns!), but I heaven't touched it for ages.

As far for my mobile, the current games will do to bring me some joy when I'm really bored. I might actually download some games in the future though. But I think that I'll probaly have a new phone with other games by then.

I wouldn't actually buy them, btw. I'd get myself a datacable and warez the games since my phone should support most java games.

Not so! We're moving towards devices with 1,000+ functions - phone, organiser, browser, camera, game-station, gps receiver etc etc etc etc etc. These devices aren't really phones anymore. They should be referred to as just 'mobiles'.

While I agree on some points there, I disagree with others, sure it would be nice to have it all under one roof, carrying gadgets is the bane of my life, I came into work this morning with the following...

GBAsp tucked in my inside jacket pocket
Nokia cell phone in my left trouser pocket
Portable USB stick MP3 player in my breast pocket on my shirt
Laptop and pda in my brief case.

Now as these devices have got smaller and smaller over the years they become easier to carry, it's just a pain having to carry so many, I'd love to merge one or two of them together, but what do you do?, as soon as you start merging products together, you start to loose quality, look at the ngage, probably great as a games machine or a phone, but together they look fucking hopeless, look at pda's that double up as mp3 players

That's my only gripe, increase the functions, decrease the useability.

That's the current situation, but it'll get better. What if you had a PDA (that fits in jacket pocket) with a detachable phone and detachable MP3 player? I'm talking detachable at one easy press. The phone rings, answer it, then dock it when used.

I can see a time when everyone will be obliged to carry a mobile device - they could replace money. My only fear is you'd probably be tracked by big brother.

That's why I have a phone, not a "mobile." I don't want all that shit on my phone. It's going to suck when I have to get a new phone soon, too, because they don't offer any good plans for my old one anymore. So, now I have to buy a new phone with all kinds of useless shit just so I can get a better calling plan.

Unless American phones are fundamentally different to ours, you could get a new phone on the better calling plan, then sell the phone for its full value and use the new contract SIM card in your old phone. For example, I could have a Nokia 7210 for a much subsidised £50 on contract, sell the 7210 for £200 and carry on using my T68i on the new contract. Easy money

I love my function-filled T68i. Why? It synchronises with Outlook. Contacts (including email addresses), Tasks/Appointments, Calendar events, the works.

Since I always have my phone with me but am not often in front of a computer, I can program my Uni timetable into Outlook, sync it with my phone, and the phone reminds me if, where, when and for how long I have a lecture this morning. That's if I told it to remind me. It's (almost) better than sex.

The phone will also check and send my email via GPRS.

Despite all that, it's as easy to use as my old Nokia 3310.

Nah, it's not that I'm against change in general, it's just that I'm against this particular change. I don't think a phone should be used for anything other than a communications device.

Well, my old phone is a Nokia 5165. It doesn't have a port for a card. My new phone (Nokia 3585i) has a card port, but it didn't come with a card. Bleh, It was time for a new phone anyways... I'll miss my old one dearly, but I'm liking my new one so far.

Sometimes the sim card wont work on phones running on different network types. I tried it when we tried to move a tmobile card from a samsung R225 or something phone to a Motorolla shit phone.

they can be unlocked with a data cable or unlocking kit. or if you have an o2 or cellnet phone, it will not be locked at all.

dunno about american ones though... i know they haev a different text message standard, and theres still soem areas with analoge signal (uk has been 100% switched to digital for years)

You'll just have to ignore the additional (non phone-like) features and say ‘this is a phone’. Obviously manufacturers will add as much crap as possible to get one over the opposition. I wouldn’t mind a mobile that doubles as an arcade emulator. Esp if it retains hi-scores. I’m not keen on the ‘paying’ part though.

So they don't have a SIM (this little half-inch by half-inch gold plated chip in a tiny plastic holder) at all? How bizarre.

Whiteflip: Our phones do that too. You need to 'unlock' a phone bought from Vodafone to have it work on, say, a T-mobile SIM. However if you buy the phone from the maker, it isn't sim-locked, so it will work on any network.

Contrary to popular belief, unlocking is perfectly legal. It's unblocking that's illegal, because that allows a stolen phone to work again.

its how the network know who you are. a handset is the same as a regular phone anyone can use it with their line. the sim is YOUR line and phone bill.

The SIM card among other things stores your "Address". like your street address or your home telephone number. So if you take the card out and put it in another phone you will still have the same number.

You also get the bennifits of having the same prefences and all your phone book entries stored too.

Precisely. The SIM stores your own phone number and the specifics of how to connect to that network (the frequencies it uses, etc). It also holds 99 (although some BT Genie ones reportedly held 150) phone numbers from your address book if you want it to. The other data it stores depends on the phone you're using it in. I've never seen someone storing their street address on it though.

I call it bizarre because without a SIM, a UK-spec phone won't be able to connect to a network, so it can't make calls.

Heh... well my phone has all of that programmed into it. I don't need a card. It doesn't have my personal information or anything (just the phone's number and other technical info), but each individual phone is recognized on the network without using cards.
