early/mid 2003

plus when the aricebo radio telescope's input ends, their southern hemisphere telescope starts taking in data

the astropulse client will start up soon after the data from the northern hemisphere

Quote:
To support future projects we are developing the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC). Like the original SETI@home, BOINC consists of a client program and a data-distribution server backed by a database. BOINC, however, is not a specific application program - it's a framework that can support many different applications. This will make it easy for us to run multiple computations simultaneously - like AstroPulse and our southern hemisphere search - and to release new versions of these applications without requiring you to manually download and install software.

You choose the projects in which to participate, and you decide how much of your computing resources should go to each project. Your PC might search for ET, study global climate change, and do biological research, all at the same time.
and, for us in competition ;D

[quote]
Unified accounting: BOINC will have a cheat-resistant accounting system that reflects actual computation done (not just a count of workunits, which may vary widely in size).

I guess when SETI is folded up up we should have a vote as to what to crunch next. As it stands we can easily get into the top 1000 club teams and top 5000 of all teams.

and as an aside... I think we should do SETI 2 (Astropulse) or the SETI Southern Hemisphere Search.

How can my computer be so darn SLOW at this? I still haven't even finished a work unit, after 19 hours. It's at 95% right now. What specs make some people's go faster than others? I thought it was CPU speed, but that's obviously not it.

A) Make sure you are using the CLI client. The screensaver sucks, apparently.
B) Seti@home uses a very low thread priority, so runs the fastest when you are doing nothing else with the computer.

I average about 5hrs/WU on an Athlon XP 1800. 19 hours is exceptionally long, considering your computer's specs.

I'm not using the screensaver... in fact, I let the program run for 7 hours the other day, with nobody using the computer, and it's STILL taking this long. Something doesn't seem right at all

<edit>Finally finished one. 19h 30m 4.5s - and now I've got 6.7% done in 13 minutes... but it doesn't go that fast all the time. That's with me using IE, too... and I wasn't even ON the computer when it was going so slow that one day</edit>

It's possible you just got a VERY difficult work unit to do. Some are much slower or quicker than others

See how it goes on this next one

Depends on what data you get from the Arecibo Radio Telescope. My older machine takes like 60 hours to pump out one work unit. It used to take longer as I was on that computer everyday. My new machine can handle roughly 4 work units in one day. One thing that speeds it up is defragging your hdd. It runs faster because it doesn't have to find the place scattered across the hdd.

A virus scanner? SETI writes to it's file about once a minute, a virus scanner will serverly slow that down. Other than that I'd suggest pressing ^+Alt+Del and look at what's using the cpu time in the process pane. My SETI is usually above 70% at all times. You might have something hogging the processor.

I've done 7! And my average work time is down to about 8 hours, so it's definitely improving.

Number 8 is almost done, 98% at 3h50m!

We're doing OK still... interest seems to be fading though

COME ON GUYS! It doesn't take any effort! Just install the screensaver client if you can't be arsed with the commandline - it takes no effort and it really doesn't slow down your machine unless it's *very* old

PUMP PUMP PUMP!

You can all have waffles if you start crunching again or join the team. Maybe even syrup if I'm in a good mood! (subject to Phily's approval of course )
