The last I checked, mybestbets didnt TOUCH winamp usage info. You sign up, you tell it what genres you like, it asks you if you've listened to certain people, rate them, it reccomends more. THATS WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM.

lol, good work there 2ndart you took these guys apart.

after your analysis on the adware stuff all they could do was generically flame you "shut up!".

to whoever said "he who shouts loudest has the most to hide", or whatever, the only shouting i see in this thread is from the sycophantic winamp defence camp.

2ndart argued his case intelligently enough, with humility - which a poor percentage of winamp devotees showed (although nearly all the moderators/wamp affiliates seem to retain a grip on sanity).

an inspiring display of principled argument and wanton pedantry. i especially liked the induced threats of banning - well done 2ndart, you have earned this year's Golden Billygoat award.

Maybe I'm dumb, but I'm not understanding an essential issue here...

Regardless of whether a person considers Winamp to be spyware or not, we all can agree that spyware must connect to the internet in order to send information, right?

DJ Egg pointed out in a post back on page 1 of this thread how to turn off internet connectivity in Winamp.

I personally don't think WA is spyware, but I tell it I have no internet connection anyway, just because I don't like sharing my bandwidth with anything non-essential.

If you turn off internet connectivity in the application, even if it were spyware, you've just de-nutted its "spyware abilities". And if you're REALLY paranoid and think WA might ignore this setting, you could monitor all your network/internet traffic to see that WA isn't sending anything over the wire.

So what remaining issue could there possibly be?

just to clarify - yes, i did register just to post that. i have a strong empathy for the underdog, and i felt that 2ndart put in a good performance, especially considering how outnumbered he was.

incidentally i have just downloaded winamp5, and i've no complaints so far. the only thing i could consider a gripe is the option (on by default) to add an AOL icon to my desktop! ouch. oh well, a developer's gotta earn a crust, right?

well there is the best way to prevent spyware on your machine...

...just don't have a computer in the first place.

or as already said, just kill all net access, options, etc like installing a firewall and block all program activity that way.

if you're worried about people tracking you movements/information then really being on the net isn't such a good idea now is it?

Regarding the original topic of this thread, DJ Egg gave the answer back on page 1 (as previously written a few posts up).

Regarding the rest of this thread...it's hilarious! But perhaps it should really be merged into one of the "joke" threads? The title implies this is a serious topic, and I'd hate for anyone using forum search to come across this and think the theme of the entire thread is serious.

What makes this thread so good is that it's never deteriorated into mindless flaming (well, not quite). So you get this extensive argument againt someone who's opinion is just so obviously wrong he almost deserves to be flamed.

Another benefit: When a "posse" begins to form behind the person who's wrong, it becomes easy to categorize them, especially if they do it multiple times. Helps with ignore list maintenance.

what i don't get is that with 2ndart's whining, he still signed up for an account on this forum...

you know, which collects more data from him than winamp itself does...

I'm real sorry for bringing up this sorry thread from the dead... but reading 2ndart's posts about the "Allow Winamp to report anonymous usage statistics", it's true that having a (recommended) beside it is somewhat misleading.

Perhaps that could be removed and all parties would be happy.

They want user feedback and how people use Winamp, its at your own will to uncheck that box when you install Winamp.

Nothing harms your computer (IMHO) if check or uncheck that box.

The bits are shipped off to AOL's Bit Recycling Facility. From there the bits are recycled into AOL Installation files then burnt to a CD. It is a lot cheaper for AOL to recycle the bits instead of buying new ones for the CDs since they mail out so many. And it's digital-environmentally responsible since the bits just to waste room in a landfill somewhere.

ok, winamp5 = winamp2.9 with modern skinning.
next, if you dont like features, if you actualy pay attention when installing, you will see, you have options to not install things.
next, riping and burning cost to use, because they cost nullsoft money to use (cos its software from someone else that NS pay to use).
lasty, if you dont trust nullsoft, fell free to fuck off to any other player... we, quite frankly, dont care

Good job, Bizzeh. You oughta work in the tech support forums or something. I mean jesus, the way people can go on and on for three pages about some things without ever addressing the valid and well-put issue at hand...

I second that. 2ndart kept up a good discussion, most of you just make yourself look really really stupid.

Personally I don't agree with 2ndart at all, but he's obviously a lot more intelligent that most of the Extreme serial Nimrod posters here. Yes, I created an account just to post this, I couldn't believe the abuse he got for his well thought out discussion.

I have one question: Why does Winamp have the "collect usage" option?

I don't want 12 year old posters popping up to tell me to take off my tin foil hat, I'd like an answer to my question.

I use Winamp happily, I just untick the box. I've always wondered why it's there though and why it's "recommended" on inital install.

Cue the "stfu" and "I'll ban you" sheep...

i've wondered about that, too, muppet.

in theory it's to help them "improve the product" - they'll collect info on what parts of the program the average user uses, and they can then concentrate on what's important. no idea though - i uncheck the box too.

as for the 2ndart thing, i think he used a verbose writing style to disguise a deep stubborness, but that could just be me. those flamebaiting him were clearly not helping

If they want it to improve the product, why does each person get their own unique ID? I've never understood how that could help. I don't do product development though.
Note for the sheep: I ask because I'm interested, not because I think my every move is being watched.

His style certainly was stubborn but I think he raised a number of interesting points, most of which were above the posters here who were more content to stand behind DJ Egg and attack him, rather than discuss his points.

Having re-read the whole dicussion I think that AdAware/SpyBot should probably flag Winamp as an "Interesting" if the box remains ticked, if only so people are aware of the implications of that option (Oh no, where's my tinfoil hat!)

It's an interesting discussion. I'm still a diehard Winamp fan though
