I will be starting my Sophomore year of Highschool (10th grade) in a few days. But this is the first time I will be actually going to highschool physically. Around here, Junior High is 7-9th grade, and High School is 10-12 grade. I still live with my parents. I will be taking as many computer courses as I can because, well, I love computers.

Orange Coast Community College, Orange County
(Mentioned in Playboy magazine for best campus in the US to girl-watch)

Living with my father, which is fine- saves much needed rent/utility $ for more fun things- real estate in this area is prohibitively expensive for students. (the apartments in my area start around 700-800 for studio/one bedroom )

I'm majoring in Graphic Design, planning on transferring to Cal state fullerton next year.

Classes: (All the academic crud that i put off)
English 101
Geology
Geology Lab
Psychology 101
Macromedia Flash (I cant believe it, i'm learning the demon plugin)
Painting 102

i begin my first year of university in exactly 5 days
i'm nervous, and excited

frosh week is gonna ROCK, is all i have to say

i'm going to be living in residence, which will be interesting
i'm in a small college at the largest university in canada (it's split up into things called colleges, each student is a member of one, sort of like the houses in harry potter, i guess)
my room-mate is the boyfriend of a girl i went on a few dates with, which might make things awkward, but he and i have been talking, and get along fairly well (though i bet god had a good laugh at this)

and i'll most definetely be incommunicado next week, and most likely the week after, at LEAST, since i'll be settling in, and getting into the routine of things

i'm taking:
critical reading and writing
introduction to the irish language (though oddly enough, i've never seen specified WHICH language, so i'm sort of assuming it's gaelic)
intro to ancient near eastern cultures
german cultural studies
the sun and it's neighbours (a sci course for humanities students)
introduction to prehistoric archeology
religions east and west, a comparison

yay, no maths, one science, which is only a half year dealy, my schedule ROCKS

ooooo, you are going to the same uni I just graduated from! Except I was in the largest college, University college. You must be in New, Innis or St Mikes? (for the record, I'd want to be in Gryffindor, but one of my close friends wants to be in Ravenclaw, she likes their colours better)

@ sun and it's neighbours. Take a real science course! Life on Other Worlds is a good astronomy course, I really enjoyed it.
A GREAT anthropology course is ANT204 (I think) Physical Anthropology. The prof is absolutely amazing! Check of the anti-calander, you can get a copy at ASSU, in the Sid Smith building.

Anyway, I just graduated from U of T (in Canada), with an honors BSc with high distinction, specialist in molecular genetics and molecular biology, minor in chemistry. Final GPA 3.8 out of 4.

Starting Graduate school in a few weeks. Studying DNA repair in respect to cancer genetics in London, England. Not sure where I'll be living eventually, but for now in a Manor house when I get there. I plan on buying a moped/scooter thing. The whole driving on the left side of the road is going to take some getting use to.

you're right, aquila, i'm going to u of t, but i'd prefer not to mention which college i'm at, since that's where i'm living, and i don't really want to publicize my address, but i bet that if i gave any more clues you could guess it

i have the anti-calender, though i didn't relaly put it to use, just checked about the intro to the irish language

and i'd take a real science course if i could do science, i barely passed physics, and i failed calculus, so these transfer credit courses are as close as i can get, i think

though if you have any advice on u of t, please feel free to pm me w/ it

totally understandable, I just said UC cause I'm not there anymore. I know a lot about the science courses and stuff at U of T, but I'm afraid I don't know much about the arts courses.

I am a parent and dont go to school, but try to learn something new everyday.

Anyway, I went to register my sons Dylan (5th grade) and Kyle (2nd grade) for their new school today and almost started criing right there in school.

I was looking at their school books for this year and Dylans books are the same exact books he had 1 1/2 years ago!!!!!!!!!! They dont have any advanced placement classes in elementary school here! I was so upset. I spoke with the principle and she said there was nothing they could do. I wanted to advance him to at least 6th grade, but again she would not listen.

I think I am going to homeschool them this year. I dont feel the kids should be punished just because they were in advanced classes and that their previous school was way ahead of them.

The kids think it is great because they said they know it all and can sleep through this year and pass, but I dont think they should just sit around all year and be bored.

Should I homeschool them to keep them on the same learning pace or should I let them just hang out this year?

christopher lowell is the fabulous host of his own show on the home and garden network. even though he's a horrible interior decorator, people assume he's good because he's so outrageously gay. i think he's hilarious in a bad way, but doesn't do very much to get rid of the homosexual stereotypes that plague the gay community. maybe one of our gay forum members could verify that for me? (am i wrong?)

Hi Missy,
I'm not really sure what you should do... but I was placed in a similar situation a couple of times (as a student). My primary school was very small (basically ten students per teacher), and we advanced to quite a high standard of education. On moving to secondary school (at age 11 in the UK) I found that I was between one and three years ahead of the rest of the school in many subjects (particularly history, maths, geography and the sciences). However, I hadn't studied any languages (children in the UK only begin learning foreign languages at secondary school).

The school wouldn't let me advance years, so I erm, did nothing and passed the years earning excellent grades in most subjects. I concentrated on languages and took French, German, and Spanish which I was able to devote more time to, as I didn't need to do anything really for any other subject.

I'm not really sure what would have been better - I mean going to school gives children more than just education as they mix with other pupils. Advancing me years would, as the school pointed out, mean that I would no longer be with people from my own age-group.

Having said that, I would probably have done better, education-wise, if I had been forced to work harder. You see now why it's a difficult choice to make?

The same thing happened to me again at University - they insisted I take the first year of the course, despite the fact it was only there bring the people who hadn't done Advanced level in the subjects up-to-speed. Thus I did nothing but drink and be merry for a year. Which wasn't all bad

As someone who homeschooled for 3 1/2 years of High school, I am a very big advocate of it. The stereotype lingers Homeschool is not just for trailer trash, movie stars, and kids fresh out of juvenile hall. If you look around, there are some really great programs, and some of which are accredited.

Not to mention, it gives you great flexibility, time to do things with your children, and the freedom to turn their some of their intrests into educational experiences.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I have the time to devote to homeschooling since I am only working 8 days per month at the moment.

The boys really want to go to school. This is because they want to be able to meet some new kids.

I just dont want them to end up wasting time. They are all so smart. (They did not get it from me). My youngest (Kyle) whom is 7 has an iq of 131 and I dont want him sitting in a classroom this year adding up how many more people went to the market than went to the farm when he was adding fractions. His reading books consist of One fish two fish when he can read a childs bible and harry potter books and understand them.

I would rather that they were with older kids and not their same age group than just sitting in a classroom taking up space.

Another challenge I have to face is that My oldest and youngest children have adhd. (Attention defecit) and while they dont have behaviour problems, they tend to get into trouble in school for talking and distracting others because they finish their work so fast. If they can finish the advanced work faster than the other kids what will happen when they are this bored?

I want them to be able to have interaction with other children, I just dont want them to waste their abilities and capabilities. I only wish that I was 1/2 as smart as my boys.

its a known fact that no-one learns anything in primary school - except social skills, and perhaps they are the most important. kids need to know how to interact with others, share, deal with bullies etc... my little brother is ultra super smart and his teacher gives him and some other child prodigy in his class heaps more challenging work - could that be an option for your boy?

having said that, i think it is great you are spending time with them, because they are also gonna be learning from you - just being home for them when they are gives them an advantage over a lot of kids.
ah - children - so damn impressionable

Really great programs allow plenty of social interaction- case in point, my home school convened once a week like a traditional classroom and recieved instruction and science labs- and then they actually ran all kinds of activities for the students, like all the dances and formals.

Its definitely at least worth checking out what is in your area...
