lame threads

actually, it's more of a vorbis thread. With the new mp3 decoding payment thing, is anyone here converting/converted to vorbis?

anyone tried any other strange and exotic formats (like flac or wma )?

or will you just be boring and stick with mp3 (for those of you who don't get it, lame is an mp3 encoder)

Er, I think Binary Hero is talking more about converting themselves to using the vorbis standard as a preference, not re-encoding all their existing mp3s to ogg.

Personally, I'm sticking with lame encoded mp3s, with a nice bit of VBR and everything. It provides for the most compatibility, for the moment (that, and I can't be bothered to re-encode everything from CD or Vinyl...)

I'm not quite sure I follow - Midi and ogg serve completely different areas, whereas ogg and mp3 are both lossy compression. A further area is lossless compression, like using wav or monkey's audio format.

I took the opportunity to convert to Ogg recently as I've just built a new machine, and it was a choice between ripping all my CDs again or buying two cheap network cards and copying the mp3s from one machine to the other.

I was tempted to go the network route but I've spent enough money on this thing as it is.

I've found that Ogg q 5 is much faster to encode than LAME --aps and my cloth ears can't tell the difference anyway....

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty
