NTFS: Compatibility - HELP! :)
I'm downgrading my computer from XP to 2000 Advanced Server as XP is really rather annoying
![]() Anyhow... could someone please advise me as to whether there are any compatibility issues between the versions of NTFS used by 2000 and XP, as I understand they are different I have two partitions, one OS and one data. I'm going to reformat the OS partition to put 2000 on, but need to know if 2000 will be able to access the data partition OK. Thanks for any help you can give, James He uses statistics like a drunk uses lamp-posts: for support, not illumination. |

to the best of my knowledge, the file systems are identical. if they're not, microsoft probably supply a patch to allow you to access the new version. i don't think it's been upgraded though...
//edit- have checked, they seem to be the same - be careful if you have encrypted any files though, as the new OS won't be able to unlock them... //edit2- check for specific user's files, they may be locked, as you are not gonna be logged in on that OS. read this also... |

you should be able to read all encrypted files if you are the admin and have acces to the certs used in XP. export them to disk then import them to Win2k.

Why are you runnig the advanced server? You just like running a ton of things you don't need?

But yeah, unless you are running a giant web/file/etc server there is no need to be running advanced server. | |

By default, a whle shitload of unnecessary processes are running. If you turn them all off, you pretty much end up with just Windows 2000 professional, so why ot just run that?
Do you really need to run your own DHCP server? For the freedom to express myself in my own way without fear of being censored or banned.47 65 6C 61 65 64 2E 63 6F 6D 00 |
