Spyware Warning!

Spyware Warning!

For anyone using the spyware-FREE Kazaa Lite software...

Recent attempts have been made upon starting Kazaa Lite whereby an auto-notification (in the form of a pop-up) prompts you to "upgrade", claiming new version 2.0.2 available. The pop-up lures the unsuspecting in by claiming "Integrated anti-virus protection, customizable skins, + more!". It then asks you to click YES to update.

HOWEVER... this is an attempt to install the spyware-ridden full-blown Kazaa Media Desktop software on your computer!!!

The executable file that is downloaded is named kmd202gu_en.exe and is downloaded via the download engine you use to download songs, sending the executable into your "shared folder".

What to do? Only one thing. Say NO to the pop-up, and do NOT update, as prompted. Then you have to suffer the inconvenience of having the pop-up appear and reappear EVERY time you start up Kazaa Lite! Just say NO every time. Downloading the executable file and then deleting/not installing does nothing. This new sly and slick method of getting their spyware onto your system constantly checks your version.

That's the entire point! I HAVE that version! ANY Lite versions are starting to receive these upgrade notifications.

isnt the point of kazaa lite to make a spyware free program?
i dont see why the makers would leave themselves open to critisism and loss of trust etc by putting on spyware when they say they r oppose to it...seems like a hoax

Kazaa lite is spyware free.

It just checks which version you're using and asks if you'd like to update. The problem is that it wont update to kazaalite 2.0.2, it will update to kazaa 2.0.2. This isnt new, and happened back when 1.7.0 came out etc.

As far as i can tell, kazaa lite 2.0.2 doesnt get the upgrade popup, and shouldnt until a new version of kazaa is released.

http://doa2.host.sk/kazaa2.htm

Its at the top of the downloads section.

[edit] d'oh, it links back to the index page...

Go to the download section, kazaa 2.0.x download page, and you'll version 2.0.2

[/edit]

i got that last night, noticed that it said "download KaZaA v2.0.2", and figured that it was the 'proper' version, due to the capitals, annoying message, and not having 'lite' on the end.

this is exactly why Auto Updating should be ignored in any program. You should ONLY upgrade after going to the proper site and clicking the appropriate links.

If you don't want to worry about spyware programs, then use something else besides Kazaa. I’m sure there are programs that are just as good as Kazaa.
