Legal issues
Hey everyone!
I'm a new user to SHOUTcast. I mainly joined the community because I wanted to listen to my favorite radio station at school! But of course this was REAL radio, not internet radio. So I downloaded SHOUTcast, and set everything up. Right now I'm using my everyday alarm clock radio, which works alright. I also have a Radio tuner in my computer (with a 6 foot antenna). I have tried both, and both work just fine. My main problem is legal problems. I, in no way, shape, or form want th claim that the music is mine. I only want to be able to stream the radio station over the net in good quality format and stereo. The radio stations website has a "live" feed. But it's 8 bit, mono, and 4 minutes behind! What do you guys recommend? How much trouble can I get into? Also should I password protect it? |

well first thing is don't list in the yp, and secondly set the RIPOnly feature to Yes, that will alow you to allow only certain IP's to listen to your server. If you list in the yp and promote it the radio station you are broadcasting would have right to sue you.

no, but if you aren't listed and you don't promote it through websites no one will find it.

According to my understanding you can not re-transmit
another station's transmission without thier express permission, and if you do, and make it available to others, promoted or yp'd or not, they can sue you. If you wish to do what you propose within the law, and it seems your intentions are to be as such, then you should simply request permission to arrange to set your school station up on shoutcast for them, and you may be surprised at their response, as your proposition is beneficial to them. I am Canadian, and in Canada, a common law country, it is not enough to be within the letter of the law, as in the USA, but rather, one must be within the spirit of the law as well, meaning within the intentions represented by the laws. It may be permitted in the USA to steal as long as one does it within the letter of the law, but your karma, so to speak, is the same. I don't see the harm in transmitting a private signal to yourself, why would they sue you if they don't know and can't know that you do it. If the signal is private and protected from public use then he should be ok.

that's my idea to. But of course I don't want to be doing anything illigal ;-). I e-mailed the radio station. So hopefully I'll get a responce soon. But I got the IP addressed of my school, so I'll limit only the school to use it.
Cheers and thanks all. |
