Networking help required!

Help!

My networking is broken...

I have two NICs in this machine, one of which is connected to the university network, and one of which is connected to my laptop via a switch.

Now the Uni connection works perfectly (hence I can type this), but the laptop and this machine refuse to acknowledge each other's existence - ie they can't even ping one another. They have the IPs 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.5. The physical connection is working fine (all the blinkenlights come on

) and Windows pops up the info balloon saying it's connected at 100Mbps.

The laptop has XP Home and this machine 2000 Pro.

Now, I didn't change anything in software at all... all I did was shut down my desktop and remove a hard disk, then reboot... so what's going on??

Are you running any sort of firewall on either machine?

Are both machines logged in under the same username, or are the user permissions set correctly to allow access if not?

It's not something I've ever tried to set up before in that configuration, but theres no theoretical difference to a home network connected by a DSL modem to a remote machine, so there shouldn't be any problems...

Did you try hitting repair (worked for me once)? Can you ping it?

Is your firewall blocking it (unlikely since all you did was remove a drive, but its worth checking)??

It's not the firewall on this machine(Kerio Personal Firewall). I disabled and it made no difference... No firewall on the laptop.

I can't ping in either direction. Not worried about anything else yet

When I click Repair on the laptop it tries to get an IP through DHCP and fails, even though ICS is enabled on this machine.

You'll have to manually enter an ip adress then.

Yes... besides the fact that DHCP should and did work yesterday.
Anyhow, I enter 192.168.0.5 for the laptop, (where the desktop is 192.168.0.1) but it still doesn't make any difference.

When I get home i'm going to set up a seperate switch/router with a DHCP server and use that!

this whole thing = MEH!

Windows2000 and WindowsXP have their own problems getting on a network basis. Have you tried using a netsetup disk (in XP) to get them both connected?
If that doesn't work..manually setting them up is a pain.

Try getting some cross-over cable a connect the laptop and desktop together directly. If it works then you know the switch is to blame.

Also, on the desktop, make sure you assigned the 192.168.0.1 to the correct NIC. You might also try changing the desktop's ip to something like 192.168.0.2 since .1 is usually reserved for the default gateway. That shouldnt matter but its worth a try.

Yes, I am assiging the IPs to the correct adapter :P

Swampy: The desktop is 192.168.0.1 because it IS the default gateway, it does (should do) ICS for the laptop as I am only allowed to connect one piece of hardware to the LAN here (lol, little do they know

Well. It's not the switch that's at fault - i'm now connecting the desktop to the UNI Lan via it. Meh.

So come on, ideas, what else could it be!!!
