Lightbulb Winamp Media Library Wishlist

The Media Libary is very promising but it really needs some additional features (See Apple's iTunes for a very good idea of what I'm getting at):

1) Ability to delete media from the media library.
-- When content is deleted/moved from its original location,
it is not currently possible to remove the "empty" listing
in the editor without deleting the media library .xml file.

2) Winamp3 should run verification sweeps to make sure media still
exists if it is in the media library.
-- If media doesn't exist, there should be some options for the
user such as 'manual' (delete this entry, delete all entries,
ignore, ignore all, cancel)', 'automatic (same as above,
except user is not prompted for choice)'. This action must
take place as a background priority (unless explicity invoked
by the user) so it may not affect the speed/stability of
playback and loading the user interface.

3) Ability to predefine directories where winamp should be
monitoring for new media and update automatically w/o user
intervention.
-- Should work the same way that KaZaA automatically
catalogs and shares new media upon download in its home
directory or any other predefined directory.

4) The Audio CD view should work identically the same way the
"Audio Files" view works.
-- CDs should be grouped and able to be sorted by artist, genre,
etc, just like MP3s are in the "Audio Files" view. A group
listing for Audio CDs (as it already is configured) can be
very cumbersome for users with large CD collections.

5) Media entries should have a small and identifiable icon next to
the listing indicating what kind of media it is.
-- When under the "All Media" view, it's impossible to tell
what's MP3, WAV, CD, AVI, etc at a glance. (It is possible to
right-click and go to View File Info, however that becomes
both tedious and downright boring.)

Just a few ideas I had --

Media Library .xml file

Did it work for you to delete the media .xml file? Did you delete the whole folder or just certain components? I reorganized my file folders and now I come up with a million diuplicates and it's driving me nuts.

Re: Winamp Media Library Wishlist

1) Ability to delete media from the media library.
-coming

2) Winamp3 should run verification sweeps to make sure media still
exists if it is in the media library.
-like a refresh button? Been wished for, I hope it's coming.

3) Ability to predefine directories where winamp should be
monitoring for new media and update automatically w/o user
intervention.
-specify where media is located; also been mentioned.

4) The Audio CD view should work identically the same way the
-clickable columns are coming.

5) Media entries should have a small and identifiable icon next to
the listing indicating what kind of media it is.
-this is a cool idea! I second it.

A lot of this has been mentioned but still, fantastic ideas.

They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards you hear satanic messages. That's nothing, if you play it forwards it installs Windows.

I agree with the media library being awesome...it rocks. I love it.

Here's something, though, that could be a new feature if people like it: put the playlists in the media library. As in, under, say, genres, you have "rock, alternative, hardcore, blues, playlist 001" etc.

Man, you would barely ever have to use the playlist editor.

2 more suggestions,

Add support for FLAC, and APE (or customisable extentions) so I can also access my lossless files form the media library (with the above icon suggestion modified to show if its lossless or not).

Ratings and smart playlists. Log when songs are listened to and allow for a rating.

There is just one suggestion I wanted to make.

They could include an option so that, for example, when you have multiple playlists loaded and Winamp finishes playing the songs from one playlist, it jumps right to the first song of the next playlist loaded. So it's like a "Continuous Play". When it finishes playing the last song from the last playlist, it could start over, on the first song from the first playlist loaded.

This would be really perfect if you could also sort the loaded playlists the way you want (not just by name) and if you could save your lodaded playlists on one single file.

I consider this a must have. I don't know if it necessarily has to automatically update. I would like to at least have an easier way to update the media library for my frequently changing directories. For example, the media library can keep a list of directories you would like to keep updated, and then have a button that will rescan those directories.

Not even a button guys...

Just define a directory and let Winamp go. You would Never have to refresh or touch the playlist. That way I can have my dream of a player on a box dedicated for MP3 playing in the house and when I rip from my CD's to a particular directory winamp picks up on it and adds it automatically to the playlist ! No User Intervention is what Im after !!

Another rocking idea is to have a built in mp3 server. So for instance, when you are at home and have stereos and computers in different rooms, you can connect a PC on your local LAN and let the music flow thru the house (Without the reliance of an internet connection or a shoutserve where anyone can listen to your music). Iw ant my own private Music network baby !! Work, Home, mates house, anywhere !!

Well, if I put the source to the library in the SDK, will someone actually code this stuff up? Note that most of the "source" is already contained in the XML (i.e. the search boxes and stuff... only the query directory is C++, the rest is all XML controls.)

And then it became awfully quiet...

Looks like you have to do it yourself Brennan (if you didn't already do it)!

well, problem is Brennan is very busy as he's the only person coding Winamp3 fulltime theese days, so theese things would take alot of time before they could be coded, unless someone else does it..

I'm up for the challenge of adding some stuff to the media library, but some of theese things I wouldn't have any idea how to do..

I also have some media library wishes myself (some new, some already mentioned here):

-internet radio and internet tv in media library
-"devices" section in media library (ala wa2)
-directory based media library (ie: you add a "view" to the ML that is a specific directory and the ML lists whatever is in that dir and automatically updates itself whenever something gets added/removed to/from the dir)
-media library should automatically remove all entries that no longer exist on the system, and it should automatically update the entries that has had their id tag updated.

and finally the biggest wish of them all:
-More people to work on this project of adding stuff to the media library, if there's someone who actually knows how to add certain stuff wished for in this thread, could you please volunteer to help out?

Man oh man I so want to have directory monitoring in Winamp's Media Library... that would pretty much eliminate almost every problem I have with Winamp3. I can think of nothing else I want more for Christmas guys...
