Hi, i went onto http://www.pixelplay.org/jeff/test3/ and i tried copying and pasting the code onto macromedia flash and it came out a blank and errors.

That code that you cut and pasted requires some additional back end code - a php file that basically streams the shoutcast stream to the player as a proxy. Plus, there are some settings you'll have to change, and of course, it's only for MX 2004.

I have Flash MX Pro 2004, the settings i've changed when i copied the paste the code that was provided from the http://www.pixelplay.org/jeff/test3/ I'd like to thank the person for the code.

The things i changed on the code were:

_global.streamsource = "http://www.live365.com/play/170005?&LID=560-usa&SaneID=0-1046466750741&VisitCount=1";
_global.streamDataproxy = "http://proxy.php";

to my own shoutcast server and site. Also i went on:

and it provided me a PHP File but when i upload them But no success. What did i do wrong?

Hi Everyone,

I am very interested in this for our student radio station. We have had problems so far - Shoutcast seems to support windows media sometimes, and since most of our listeners only have windows media player this is a bit of a problem!

I was wondering if someone could post the PHP and Flash code together, with a clear indication of what exactly needs changing to get to my stream. Although I have done a lot of PHP programming I have never used it as a proxy server like this - and I have no understanding of Flash at all (though I do have it installed - I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks a lot so bought the whole studio MX).

this stream is not a shoutcast stream, it is an icecast stream and its url is http://stream.samurai.fm:8050/broadcast/lb03.mp3

Well for some reason I was unable to get it to work with Icecast. Perhaps I should try Supercast.

u r right, the problem lies in the combination of IE/FLASH/SHOUTCAST, those 3 don't work together, but u can play an icecast1 and supercast streams in IE/FLASH , for example use open the player i mentioned before in IE and type http://69.93.21.204:8000 in the url box

I'm having the same problems as listed above getting flash to stream my shoutcast in IE.
Works fine under certain conditions with Opera and/or Mozilla etc.

Since I've come a little late to this discussion, but very much interested, let me see if I can summarize where we are with this -

1. Streaming ShoutCast through Flash, the relatively straight foward "loadSound (URL);" doesn't work if the listener is using IE because of some header conflicts.

2. You can use some PHP script to take care of the header problems, but is seems like a complicated process for the average joe.

3. You can use the relatively straight foward "loadSound (URL);" to stream through Icecast (icecast 1, not 2), Live365, or a Supercast stream

However, in all of the cases above, whether it's streamed from ShoutCast, Icecast1, or Supercast, the Flash Player doesn't release memory and hence you can't listen to the stream for a long time.

Does that summarize it? So, three pages of discussion so far and no good solution. Let me know if I've missed anything.

P.S. Flash Communication Server bypasses all of the issues raised above with using Flash and Shoutcast/Icecast/etc and can stream mp3s (and/or video) 'till the cows come home.

My issue is it doesn't have a WinAmp plug in like ShoutCast does. I've already got WinAmp setup as my "broadcast" app. I just need to go directly from WinAmp to Flash Communication Server (then to Flash).

Anyone want to build (capabile of building) this for me? I may have have some $$$.

I've tried doing this myself but then I figured, why bother? If you just want to have a player embeded in your website or pop up you can build one from php and html. The only problem is you probably have to use real player or WMP and you can't change the look of them. You can have them outside the window so they don't show but then the user can't control volume, play and stop etc.

So thinking about it...it might be a good idea to keep trying, but you can check out what I mean with the one I quickly built, just an example of what you could have if you can't get a flash one going.

That player is about 95% editable and if you know java possibly 100%.

I will be trying out this flash streaming thing as then I could replace the WMP part and have it looking how I like

In an effort to build our own Flash Player that is compliant with Shoutcast, I uncovered the source code required to do the job. An outstanding programmer (Jeff) has posted a functional player and the core ActionScript functions to get it working. Although not listed, a PHP script is required to parse the playlist and present it in a Header friendly format. See the Code Bank link when you get to his site for the full threaded discussion. Im looking for an embedded player flash would have been nice, I dont use php, asp, or and advanced coding just plain old html and Im looking for a way to connect my listeners so that they dont have to download a spacific player, an embedded flash player would have been nice, I tried the code from page 1 or 2 of this topic and it plays my stream but in chipmonk mode very fast and squeeling, dont know whats the prob there or how to fix.

I wouldnt have a prob with getting this flash code to play right then put en exe up on a server and just intruct listeners to select open and run. If I could get it to play right any ideas why its playing so fast?

Or is there anyother way to get a globally accepted embeded player through a web browser?

I run a daily radio show and it would be great to be able to offer my listeners a way to listen at work as some of their companies don't allow them to install any apps on their computers at work. Sorry, no update. Shoutcast in Flash is sadly not going to happen. Flash can't handle the different file header and has the memory problem dealing with the streaming audio, and Shoutcast probably won't ever have a port because WinAmp is the player of choice.

The php socket code does allow you to bypass the flash security model, but again, the memory problem tends to blow things up.

I recently built a flash-client for playing an icecast-stream (I'm using a patched version of icecast 2.2.0 [the patch resolves problems between flash's sound-object and missing mp3-headers]).

so far everything is working really nice on all browsers (incl. IE), but I still have teh problem earlier discussed here: the browser/flash is caching all streamed data in memory, so after listening to a stream for 1,2 hours (depending on quality of stream of course), flash consumes several hunderd mbytes, which makes most (windows-)computers unusabel

I coded an interval-based timer into my flash-player, which disconnects the stream every 30min & plays a jingle - but even the fact that I use the flash-command "delete" to free the memory used by the Sound-object, the totally consumed memory doesnt go down

is there any other workaround for this problem?

You're right - Flash doesnt' release the sound object from memory. That's been a long standing bug with Flash, and it doesn't seem lik eMacormedia is in any rush to fix it. It might have been fixed in version 8 of the player, but who knows.

Shoutcast doesn't send normal MP3 headers, so Flash can't stream it dorrectly. A regular header would include file size and other items that Flash looks for, but a stream doesn't have those attributes. Until a standard is developed on headers are or aren't sent or they change how flash can pull MP3s, there's no Flash/Shoutcast integration.

Pretty sad - it seems like everybody wants it too.

Hello brains, after weeks of trying, looking, scratching to make Flash and shoutcast work together, I decided to give up, for the following simple reazons:

1. Tryied with PHP/Flash, No success, Memory load issue.

2. IE doesnt support the basic LoadSound script embeded due to header conflicts.

3. ID3 Tags cant be readed from flash on a shoutcast stream, I had to pull them to a php file in order to load them into Flash.

I was too close to get it running, I have the trackname displayed on the player, it refreshes itself after an interval, but in the end, the heart of the script, doesnt work. TOOOO BAAAAD.

MACROMEDIA & SHOUTCAST. If you read this post, please know that hundreds of users (including me) had burned out their brains for this. GIVE US A LITTLE HOPE, or an option.

I'm kind of surprised that the NullSoft community hasn't developed a browser plugin that pulls shotcast. Windows Media plugs right in, yet to listen to shoutcast, you need WinAmp standalone.

Hopefully one of these days, Macromedia will beef up Flash's sound class and be able to handle the header/meta data issue, but until then, it's definately a no go.

so icecast can work, just flashs ability to release the memory its used up is proving to be a pain

how about after say 20mins we load another instance of the player into say a main flash doc, try an sync them together when the other instance of the player movie is loaded so there is no interuption to the service!??

that way im sure flash would release the memory used, as its loaded a new object and has done away with the previous one?

That sounds like a mighty complicated method. The problem is that you woulnd't have a way to pass the current sound object to a new swf loaded into the parent player on the page.
