Is it illegal to . . . . . .
Is it illegal to copy games (onto cd-r) my brother & friends have and to use the copied games for my own personal use??
Michael. PS: I have no intention to copy games for financial gain. |

Yes it is. It is considered financial gain because you didn't spend the money that could have bought those games. You can make copies of games and use the copied versions yourself, but you can't sell or let others use the other copies.

It is legal to make copies of copywrited material for backups in case something happens to the original. But if you no longer own the original you must destroy all copies that you have made. Now try to explain those laws (and I know about the precedents and legal decisions that created those laws) so it would make sense.

actually, it can't really be enforced because you weren't infringing any copyright laws, as i understand it

What I don't understand is if they don't want us to copy these things why do they provide us with the technology to do so? It's like giving a 12 year old boy a dirty book and then telling him not to bet-off.

So you can't think of any legitimate reason to hold large ammounts of data on removable storage?

Thats what Zip Disks are for...or if you wish to carry a copy of you harddrive use a Jazz disk, Why do we need a burner if not to copy copyrighted data...makes no sence.

Heck core dumps can be gigs in size as can home movies! Large removable media is a must these days! |

According to the EULA of practically any software, you can be prosecuted for copying it, whatever your intentions were.

If you own the game and only burn a copy of it onto CD as a backup, then it is not illegal. Otherwise, it is.

You can transfer your right to play the game to someone else provided you deinstall the game beforehand. That means if you go over to a friends house, you can give them that game provided you deinstall it on your computer beforehand and install it when you get home. Then it's his fault because he didn't destroy the game when he handed you the disk.

well, its not having having the game installed, its the licence agreement that goes with it, thus shareware is only active for say 30 days, or is only a snipit of the game/program. freeware on the otherhand (like what you are using right now) has a free licence agreement, but you can't say winamp is yours and make money out of it.
so if you asked to nice game devolpers if your friend could buy another copy of the licence agreement, then, it would be legal to do so. btw, i may no all this, doesn't mean i follow it. My multimedia teacher hates me because i own pirated version of every program that we use. btww, if there are any cops/sniches/people who report these things to people to come and hurt me, you didn't read that. |
