right, i am going to be honest here:
1. it's very basic (i know it's your first and all, but it is a lot like the base skin, may only get 1-2 stars for originality)
2. the red cursors on a red background?! - very hard to see at times.

originality - 1
functionality - 3 (maybe 3.5/4 if the reviewer is in a good mood)
aesthetics - 2 (3 if in a good mood and likes red).

I've seen worse first attempts. The skin looks ok but couldve been much better if it wasnt so bright. It hurts my eyes.

Hey, we've all got to start somewhere... it's better than what I was expecting from the unfortunate typo in the thread title (was thinking it might be objectional content ).

ow, my eyes!

don't let us discourage you from skinning...let these encourage you to try harder

think "outside of the box" for your next attempt
don't confine yourself to the rectangular buttons and bars
design the skin, don't just fill in the components
and use more colors than just red, black and white
get a template (Jellby, this is your cue) it'll make things much easier
but don't give up just because we don't like your first skin. it's your first. it's always hard to get into something with the first try. if you keep trying you'll get into the swing of things

oh yeah, and
Welcome to Skin Love

Plus points - it's not a skinner.exe, which definitely shows effort on your part to do the work to make something of your own. Hell, it's better than my first attempt by far.

Suggestions:
*cues Jelby* get skinner's atlas and read the readme, and use the bitmaps in there as a template, much easier IMO than skinning over the base skin.
*cues db* look at db's tips and tricks file
unzip a skin you particularly like to see what the skinner did, the finished skin is ofttimes what the skeleton.bmp was, minus buttons, or sometimes just the pressed state of the buttons depending on the animation.

So many people are encouraged to think outside the box, sooner or later (or already) thinking inside the box will be the new thinking outside the box and then sooner or later thinking outside the box will be the new thinking outside the box (except it'll be called the new thinking inside the box) and then sooner or later thinking inside the box will be the new thinking outside the box and then sooner or later thinking outside the box will be the new thinking outside the box (except it'll be called the new thinking inside the box) and then then sooner or later thinking inside the box will be the new thinking outside the box and then sooner or later thinking outside the box will be the new thinking outside the box (except it'll be called the new thinking inside the box) and then.... ARGH!

Don't you just love yo-yos / the economy / the climate / thinking in- and/or out-side the box...

Ok, ok.... here is Skinner's Atlas (see below)

Many who live deserve death, some who die deserve life - can you give it to them?
Then be not so quick to deal out death in judgement.

Only difference is that the area outside the box is about a million times larger and more varied than the area inside the box. So it's not exactly possible to have a see-saw/yo-yo effect where thinking and boxes are concerned.

Using a program like Paintshop pro or Photoshop makes skinning a lot easier. You can have the template as one layer, and your skin on top. If you can imagine, it's like drawing something with see-through tracing paper. You can see where the buttons are underneath, and can use them as a guide when you draw your own buttons/designs etc.

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.
