graphics cards help/advice/sale

basically, i want a new graphics card, but i have a relativley limited budget ()

basically, i can get a gf4 ti4200 64mb, a radeon 9100 128mb or a radeon 9000 64mb. and i basically want to know which one is best

and i also will have a gf4 mx440 128Mb ram, for sale at £40 if anyone wants it.

Why do you want to get rid of that card? That and the 128MB Radeon are both nice cards.

a gf4 ti4200 128mb inst too much more expensive than the 64mb version (about $10-15 difference US), go for that one. If thats too high the GF3 ti500 is really inexpensive now (about $85 US) and still very decent.

I'm not sure if it makes sense to go to a card with less onboard memory. I would have to recommend staying with the mx440 rather than downgrading memory. Other than that I don't have enough experience with that particular Radeon to say whether it would be an upgrade. I have had mixed experiences over the years with Radeon and nVidia cards. When I have had the chance to comparison test cards with similar price’s and on board RAM, some years the Radeons have been better and some years the nVidias have been better. Sometimes I have only noticed a difference in specific apps. And it also makes a difference as to the rest of the system. The first AMD system I built, there was no configuration of drivers, mobos, and sound cards available that would let me use the currant top of the line nVidia, I had to use a Radeon in that system. The best scenario would be to test the cards in your machine with your apps.

the radeon 9000 and 9100 aren't an option IMHO. They are based off of the old Radeon 8500's and don't offer really any of the benifits of their bigger brother cards.

I'd say, your choices are..

1) GeForce4 ti4200 128MB AGP4x ($150)

2) Radeon 9500 128MB not Pro ($175 - but the price will drop once the 9600's get released widely)

I suggest the Radeon for a few reasons. It's feature set is much more up to date with the times. It is DirectX 9 ready, so it will take advantage of any upcomming games that utilize DirectX 9 over OpenGL (which I can't imagine why they would do that, but none the less) . It's anti-aliasing is far far far more superior, both in speed and in image quality.

[Edit] Hmmm. I think think the Radeon 9500 cards may be outa ur price range. But hey, if you can splurge, go for it. It will be worth it

In all seriousness, I don't think the Radeon 9000 or even 9100 are much faster than the GeForce4 MX 440 128MB in most situations. And even if they are, probably not near enough to make it worth paying for a new card.
