Trouble setting up a server behind firewall

Whenever I try using my computer as a server I keep getting this error in the monitor:

<03/30/03@16:10:18> [yp_add] yp.shoutcast.com gave error (nak)
<03/30/03@16:10:18> [yp_add] yp.shoutcast.com gave extended error (Cannot see your station/computer (IP: 130.245.218.117:8000) from the Internet, disable Internet Sharing/NAT/firewall/ISP cache (Connection timed out))

I am at college and all the computers are behind a firewall of some sort. Is there a way to get around this or is it just not possible for me to use my computer as a server? Or is it not the firewall that's causing this, and something else?

I'm really really sorry if this has been asked before or if it's a commonly known problem. I searched and didn't find anything.
