Turntables vs. Guitars

What do you actually think about the fusion between rock & rap music? is it just a trend of is it the future of rock 'n roll? I think rappers need a band to make better live preformances and rock musicians need the rappers to give their music a powerful lyrical boost. And perhaps it could end this stupid fight about wich music is the best...

I think it's a whole genre in itself, I don't think rap\rock will go away for a few more years, and I don't think it will take over rock. Some good examples of bands that do this well are POD, Linkin Park, and Rage Against the machine.

some of it's pretty good, but a lot of it is just feeding off of the fact that such things are quite popular right now...

Personally, I think rap/rock is silly. Radio rock has become unbearable. This rap/rock hybrid takes the worst of both genres and sticks them together, making something virtually unlistenable.

Take Linkin Park for instance, they take the most rudimentary aspects of rock (95% of their guitar playing is just power chords, which any musician knows are the easiest thing to play on guitar) and they mix it with sub-par rapping. I've never been a huge rap fan, but I can at least respect some of the artists who put some feeling and soul into their rhyming, and don't fill it with swearing and only rap about mistreating women and commiting crimes, doing drugs, etc. I don't know alot about Linkin Park's lyrical content, but from the songs that I've heard (most of their first album at some time or another) it's pretty shallow and uninspired on the whole. But, whatever MTV wants to make some more money, right? If all the little 13 year olds go out and make Linkin Park multi-platinum artists based on their extremely low talent level, then so be it. Long gone are the days where musical acts were respected and did well based on their talent. I try to dis-associate myself with it as much as I can because it just doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, rap/rock is childish, but like any other pop fad, it'll go away. It's only a matter of time.

I went through an Iron Maiden phase when I was 13. Number Of The Beast, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son... etc. Great days. I got over it.

On a not-quite related note...
[rant]You can always tell when the UK music scene is in the shitter, because you start seeing depressed-looking teenagers in baggy clothes falling off skateboards everywhere you go.
Ten years ago it was Nirvana, today it's Linkin sodding Park. Shite, all of it.

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty

Yeah, cuz you know that's the entire content of LP's rapping...

As far as "it's all power chords and those are totally easy"; it's not the difficulty of the music that makes it good music. Hell, you could be flying up and down scales with key changes every bar; but that doesn't make it good music.

Sure, difficulty can impress people (a la Santana...I don't play guitar but his stuff seems pretty damn hard to imitate); and sometimes it can sound really good (again to Santana...); but if you aren't playing good music, it doesn't matter how hard it is for you to play.

Your idea that LP is "sub-par rapping"...well, I guess that's a matter of opinion. In all honesty, I think Mike Shinoda is one of the most talented rappers on the (mainstream...I could care less about the 'underground') scene. Not only does he *not* swear in his lyrics; but he *does* put feeling and soul into his lyrics..then again being someone who could obviously care less about lyrics I don't see why I'd bother arguing that one... On top of his rapping, Mike also does to quite a bit of the band's production work, writing (not just lyrically), and other such things. Little known fact - each member of the band has graduated from UCLA....with musical degrees if I remember correctly.

I have no problem when people dont *like* certain kinds of music or certain artists; but when you just say the band sucks, it's not only ignorant but insulting to them as well.

By the way, I can give you plenty of adults who are musicians in one respect or another who do like Linkin Park or POD or any one of these rap/rock groups... (no they are not 13 yr old wanna be musicians...hell I'm not even 13...)

Oh, and you can also add RHCP and Incubus to the list of 'teh eval rap/rock phenomenon"

[edit] btw I never have been and never will be one of them "depressed looking teens falling off skateboards". I think most of those people are the 'hardcore kiddy punk' genre...the Good Charlotte kind of people.

Erm dude.. I've heard maybe 4 LP songs that have any cussing in it, and i'ts edited out. And I've never heard and LP song about "smacking hoes" or "bustin' a cap" in someone. Maybe you should listen to some of LPs music before going off and saying false statemens.

LP is teh coolest! there basicly in there own music genre. and they put PLENTY of feeling and soul into there songs, take their newy for instance, plenty of heart in that. if anything rock/rap fusion id better than rap, just cus i is drummer and 5 mins of 1 drum beat sounds kinda boring

that said, you have a sum41 avatar, so i guess you like pop music too

i quite like nirvana. you got the idea that no matter how depressed, or however not musically "achieved" it was, at the very least it was heartfelt. 80s metal was the opposite - it was rarely emotional (other than fist shakin'), but was technically excellent.

since when was sum41 pop rock??
i wouldn't class there newer stuff as pop, more louder than any pop rock band, take the hell song for instance, all it is is screaming "Suddenely, suddenly, i don't feel so insecure"
