how do i open ports 8000 and 8001?

I went into my control panel and went into the settings of my internet connection and i turned off my firewall. however i keep getting an error saying that my broadcast cannot be available on the internet because i have to open ports 8000 and 8001. so i do not understand why those ports are not open if my firewall is off. so i need to know how to open those ports...please help!!!

Are you running Windows XP?

Does the nak error say "Connection refused" or "Connection timed out".

Check out http://www.radiotoolbox.com/cantheygetin and see if the reported information there helps.

Check out the Sticky post titled:

Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled:
Routers, Firewalls, and Networks. Oh My! -> General Information -> Am I running a Firewall?

Do you have a router? Is it properly configured to forward the necessary port(s) to the DNAS machine?

And go update the firmware on the router if you do have one. Linksys is one of the worst about sending their equipment out with crappy firmware. I have had to update almost every piece of firmware on Linksys equipment to get NAT to work correctly.

damn...i tried just setting up a server on my computer with my friend...
first problem, network with linksys router
i eventually managed to get through that (i think, still cant connect)
but i think thats because the ISP has me on a proxy, sooo...i just browsed the forum for an hour or so fixing the whole firewall step and opening ports and now this pops up. i did a quick search for 'proxy' but didnt see much, so anyone know how to fix this step?
cantheygetin.com reports me as 24.73.56.12 but my network settings have me on something totally different...
