24kbps > 96kbps = Good idea?
Ok. Question first. If I had someone relay a live stream going at 24kbps, re-encode to 96kbps and rebroadcast to another server, would it turn out good quality or just crap?
here is my reason for doing this. on my radio, I want to have 2 different quality streams just so I dont keep dialuppers and broadband users out. only problem with that is I would like to keep dj spots open to people with dialup, so they cannot do both 96kbps and 24kbps, just 24kbps. So, would that transfer be good or bad? |

I'm not sure about SHOUTcast specifically, but in general, you can never "go up" in quality. I don't think saving a 72dpi image at 300dpi will make it print-worthy. Similarly, I doubt you can encode up mp3 bitrates...you probably just be wasting bandwidth.

well, IF you can do 96 and have the remote server encode to 24, then you'll have two streams....

yeah, but as I said, I dont want to limit hopeful DJ's to only broadband. I also want to let dialup users do this. so 24kbps would be their only choice.

to confirm a 24kbps stream is still going to sound like a 24kbps stream at 96kbps Mp3 is a lossy format so once the audio data has been removed it cannot be put back. So don't waste your time with it unless the original can be 96kbps

And remember, a relay can not change bitrate for you. You would need a second DSP to re-encode it.
