I Just Don't Get It ??? Please HELP!

I don't get it. How do these stations have like 3000 listeners per station, running 5 of them at one time at 128k with no buffering problems and when I try to broadcast with 1 or 2 listeners at 56k, running one station, the people who are listening keep getting cut off.

I mean even with a T-1 connection, I don't think they could do this and even if they could, you would have to be rollin in dough (which most of us aren't) just to buy and maintain it. My question is: How does one go about making a truly successful internet radio staion starting from the BOTTOM (which is where I am at right now) and how do you build it (meaning computer/ server wise) with little money, so you can have listeners in the thousands, with 5 different stations?

Could I find investors or something?

Please, any help will be greatly appreciated,
thanks,
Confused and Frustrated One

My connection is cable right now, running at about 300k non-peak and about 200k peak.

Either use third party DNAS hosting or get your friends together and form a cluster of relays.

Start small. Many broadcasters fail because they don't stick to any format. Instead, they play the kitchen sink.

Most listeners aren't going to switch to a new station.

You can have dreams of being the number one Internet radio station, but it doesn't happen over night.

Also, successful is relative. Set realistic goals now and in 6 months evaluate your success.

What Fester said.....

If this is something you really want to do - i'm not talking about the heat of the moment, i'm talking about, if this IS YOUR DREAM and YOU R DEDICATED TO IT. Stcik to it. It's not gonna happen overnight and suddently you're number 1. I say let the pieces fall into place.

Stick to it and stay realistic.
Don't follow what other stations are doing, do you own thing and be original.
Don't play the Kitchen sink, rather play what the people wanna hear. Once your station evolves, get yourself a toll-free number where they can call and make requests, trust me, this WORKS!
Don't be repetitive with your music every hour. If you play Matchbox 20 in the 10:00 and 11:00 hours, make sure u leave about an hour gap in there b4 u play them again.

In 3 months(my suggestion) evaluate where you r compared t where u 1st started and see what changes need to be made to continue your growth and popularity.

These are just some internal things from my book, so I hope they work for u and anyone that wants 2 b successful in Internet Radio.

OOh another thing... Never get caught up in the Listener HYPE. If station A has 400 listeners and u have 10, don't pull your hair out. In your own time, you will succeed and u will b there too.

Thanks
JE

WOW thanks for the response and the motivation. Yes I do want to do this for the long haul, I guess it's just the starting out thing that I can't stand, but I do understand that I gotta work my way up.
I do like the idea of 3rd party hosting and the 800 number though.
As far as music goes, that's the first thing I researched and I am doing all Hip Hop & R&B strictly. Haha I hear you about the kitchen sink. Check me out if you want. It's not much right now but I think it will be better soon.

Thanks again JE and Fester
Peace,
