Why Winamp skins doesn't support the gif format.

GIF format is technically a licence based image format, so technically Nullsoft would have to pay huge licence fees to allow winamp to use gif's, and with bazillions of downloads to it's name would it really be worth it?

Hence why WA3 uses PNG support, it's a free image format, as well as being platform portable and lossless to boot.

I really didn't know the gif format was "copyright it".
That's bad.
I'll be a plan to use the PNG format with Winamp 2.x?

BTW: What game are playing in your Nintendo ?

PNG support in WA2 will come when the WA3 skin engine gets integrated sometime in the future.

is the compressed nature of PNGs part of the reason why WA3 skins take longer to load?

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

Right now, it probably contributes to it, but the main issue is the download available on the front page is so not optimised anything seems to take forever in it, starting, loading tracks, switching skins etc etc.

Add to that, bigger skin files, say up to a mb in some cases, thats a fairly sizeable file to have to unzip and decompress to your hard drive temp folder, it all add's up

However, try the dev builds, they are lightning fast, skin switching is a lot quicker, they are far more optimised code wise.

I have one skin built for WA3, that is so complex it won't run in the current public release, but runs sweet as a nut in dev builds.

"The Unisys LZW patent expires in the USA on June 20, 2003. However, according to Unisys, they hold LZW patents outside the USA that expire in 2004."

Interesting. The only thing I can say is that until MNG takes off animated GIFs are gonna be around a while.
