Installing the WMP 9 codecs breaks playback in Winamp for some reason. Reinstall the WMP v7/v8 codecs to be able to play those files in Winamp again.

ingore GoldenSphynx' post, remove in_wm.dll from your \winamp\plugins\ directory and add "wma" to in_dshow's extension list

this might or might not work

I respectfully dsiagree....

Everything I have read so far would seem to suggest that WMA version 9 files cannot be played with Winamp, due to the fact that the lossless format isn't technically wma format, but a different filetype placed under the WMA heading.

If you do insist on ripping your CD's in a lossless format, why not try using Monkey's Audio to compress your music.

Don't think you can WMA9 is fucked up Lossless and Pro aren't technically WMA, just something lumped under the WMA heading.

I am forced to quote myself.

SimonSez07, if you choose to use WMP 9 to rip your CDs, you have to give up the option of using Winamp to play the files. But anyway, why would you rip to .WMA anyways?

TSGH -> Why not to use WMA/mp3pro

TSGH -> Converting MP3's to and from various formats and Burning and ripping CD's

TSGH -> Ripping Audio CDs With Winamp (not recommended, but can be done)

Ohh, and don't forget to check out Vorbis.com. OGG Vorbis is basically the best filetype to rip music too since the MP3. You can find tons of information about it on their site.

Hope those links help you out.

Well, no, you can use WMP9 to rip to standard WMA (at your own peril of course),
and you can use Winamp to play them back (though you'll need to reinstall the older codecs first, because this is what WMP9 breaks) . . .

but Lossless WMA is an entirely different matter.
I doubt if any other player can support it yet, though LK's suggestion is worth a try (I've no way of confirming it, because I refuse to install the evil p.o.s.)

Ethan and LK have said everything else about this already . . . 'nuff said!

Lion King - thank you for your help, this method does work in WinAmp 2.91 which i just downloaded and installed. i am glad to not have to use WMP9 anymore for playback and now WinAmp seems does video too!!

GoldenSphynx - I choose .WMA for the option of LOSSLESS and the convenience offered by Windows Media Player.

Distributing these lossless media files to people who are not very technically inclined doesnt require them to install anything. And, yes, OGG is VERY GOOD but it is not lossless.

ethan_h - it seems youre right. lossless and wma pro do seem to be something else completely, im glad i can use direct show plugin to play them in winamp.
