File info tags erase themselves randomly

I have never had a problem with winamp, now all of a sudden random songs erase their info and they display as just a "-" in the playlist. It happens when just listening to music on random play. It also happens sometimes when you manually click on a specific song to play it, info just goes away after clicking. Help would be great!

Sorry, but I have no idea since I have never encountered this problem with my winamp. The only problem I have got with winamp is it freezing when I try to select all of the songs sang by males or females in my playlist but it didn't worry me because I just decided to do it the harder way and I got it acomplished. Any ways I just decided to post in here to welcome you to the forum because your the newest forumer to register that I've seen so far.

So, welcome to the winamp forums!!

Do you have any plugins installed?

Not really, sure, but if I remember correctly, the last time this happened with someone was when they had an mp3PRO plugin.

Do you have Windows Media Player 9? Apparently there is a feature of WMP9 that updates/rewrites ID3 by searching the internet. If it can not find info. the tags fields are left blank. This is done surreptitiously in the background.

More Info.

I just have geiss and acidspunk 2 installed for plugins. I have had these plugins forever though. This problem just came out of no where. I was running an older version of winamp, so i uninstalled it and downloaded v2.91 in hopes of fixing it. Problem still exists....

I do have windows media player 9. I went to tools>options>privacy and i unchecked "update my music files (WMA and mp3 files) by retreiving missing media information from the Internet. Hopefully that will do it! Thanks!

Even after turning that privacy option off in wmp 9 it is still erasing tag info, does winamp 2.91 try and update files automatically? Any more ideas??

I do not use WMP9, so I don't know the exact setting to turn off the auto update feature. Maybe Windows needs to be restarted for the change to take place. To my knowledge Winamp does not automatically rewrite ID3 tags.

My only other suggestion would be to make Winamp display the filename instead of ID3 tags. This does not solve the problem, but if the filenames contains the information you want it is a workaround.

In Winamp...
Ctrl+P (for Preferences) > Plug-ins > Input >
1. Select Nullsoft MPEG audio decoder
2. Click the Configure button
3. Click the Title/tags tab
4. Uncheckmark Use 1D3v1/v2 tags for titles

<edit> Another thought came to mind after completing this reply. Run your virus scanner. I have no idea if the tag problem is being caused by virus, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
