Internet Explorer and URL's

On my website there are links to my server's broadcast streams. Most browser's (like Mozilla) will ask the user which program they want to open the stream (ie Winamp). Internet Explorer v6 either wants to play the stream in the browser via Media Player or it wants to try to download the stream itself. I would like my audience to be able to use Winamp to listen to the stream by just clicking on the URL, and most my audience will probably be using IE. Is there a way to configure IE to open Winamp when it encounters the stream?

Probably should have posted this on the Winamp forum...doh!

uh for most people it will automatically play in winamp, but it looks like ur assochiates have screwed up.

do this......

open winamp, press ctrl+p (preferences)

goto file types, make sure that .pls file is assochiated with winamp

then click close

close winamp

reopen it

changes should now be in affect. try clicking on a link now.

For some reason windows changed the assochiation for .pls files, happens to a few people

Thanks for your reply. I checked the preferences in Winamp and under files types .pls extentions are supported. Closed Winamp and restarted and get the same effect. Maybe it's a configuration setting with Internet Explorer? Anything else I can try?

Go into Windows Explorer
Tools...Folder Options
Click the File Types tab
Find pls
Make sure it is associated with Winamp.
If not, associate it.

Go and delete your temp files.

If you have RealPlayer on your machine, you might want to uninstall it. RealPlayer screwed up all my associations big time. It's the debil!

In generally pays to know what your taking about before you post. In my case, since I'm not using .pls extentions with my broadcast (they're mp3 encoded with the shoutcast plugin) that would explain my problem. However, IE still insists on downloading the stream. It even recognized the media type as Winamp type in the download dialoge box.

If you are not using a pls, you should have posted that originally.

How do you expect people to help you if you cant help yourself by posting the proper information.

You want people to just click a link and have music play. Either set up an on demand station...

or use a .pls...
