heh, looks like the RIAA still think they are god, and above the law, don't they know about the Clinton Internet Privacy Act of 1995? Or is it not good enough for them?

Last time I checked the RIAA isnt a government-run agency, like the FBI, they have no right to go in an demand private documents like that.

The students that are being sued should sue Verizon for giving into the RIAA.

Agreed. If the sons of bitches would sell music at a reasonable fucking price, then people might not feel the urge to pirate it. Right now, if someone asks me to burn a cd for them, I'll burn two and tell them to give the other one to a friend... just to spite the fucking RIAA. I fully support file sharing, in any form.

Verizon tried to keep their identities secret under the Internet privacy act. RIAA took them to court, and won. Verizon appealed, and last i checked it the RIAA's case still held up.

So, unfortunately, Verizon can't do shit about it.

also what I dont get is HOW the RIAA manages to get the information (i.e the ISP names as well as any IP addresses) from the users on Kazaa. It's not like you can press a button on Kazaa and the IP/domain pops up, the RIAA is using some form of hacking (which last time I checked, IS illegal) to gather information about the users. and collection of otherwise private information illegally like that should be stopped, and when that happens the RIAA would be no more.

anyways I'm not scared of the RIAA, i have plenty of copyrighted material on my hard drive that I did not pay for, and yes, I do fucking share it as well. They can fuck off for all I care. Using their greedy tactics and idle threats are not gonna stop me from what I'm doing.

What can Kazaa do to work their way around this, for one, make the program so the outgoing IP address from the user who is sharing their material is encrypted, so there is no way for them to find out the IP address of the user using software that will display incoming/outgoing connections. software encryption/decryption od IP addresses inside the Kazaa software (hopefully its doable) would be a good idea.

It's easy to initiate a transfer and harvest the hostname using netstat, or even construct a client specifically designed to harvest the IP address rather than connect.

Oh yes, and I thought there was a bill allowing copyright holders to hack to protect their assets. STFW if you like, or look here if you're feeling lucky.
