id3 tag display

occasionally an mp3 in my playlist gets a large space (like 10 or 15 characters long) between the Artist and Title of the song. why does winamp do this and can i fix it? It has been happening for so long the number of affected songs is growing quite substantially.

Any third party plug-ins installed? Do you know what encoder was used to create those MP3 files?

I just have dee 2 installed. Im not sure what encoder was used for them all. But when I encode I use lame vbr. And when I download whole albums I like to make sure they are lame quality or higher (ape and ogg). Thanks for your help.

Winamp doesn't write the tags, you do (or whichever software/encoder used.)
I've downloaded a few files before (eg. with WinMX) where there's already 10 or more spaces after the ID3 Artist tag. You'll need to remove them and then Winamp will display it the way you want it. Winamp is not to blame for this.

DJegg... I am aware of this. The Problem is not in the way the tags are written (as far as I can tell). When I go to edit them they look completely normal. It may be Winamp and it may not be. All I know is that the tags appear to be written correctly but when Winamp displays them, they have huge spaces between the Artist and Title. They also look correct when used with other mp3 library software.

Hmm . . most strange.
I, for one, cannot reproduce this problem.
Anyone else?

You say "they look normal", but are you 100% sure there aren't any spaces in the ID3 Artist tag, ie. actually after the artist name?

You referred to APE and OGG files earlier. Is the problem with these file formats, or just with MP3's?

I just had that problem lately. Had the same playlist for many years, and have always been using Winamp.
All of a sudden, one day almost all my mp3's had those spaces mentioned, and I had to go threw all my mp3's manually and fix the tags. And I am not using any 3rd party plugins with Winamp either.

Yeah, I think the problem is that there are probably spaces AFTER the Artist Name in your ID3 tags.

Thank you DJ! That is the problem. Spaces after the Artist name. But, the question remains, how are they getting there? Could Winamp have anything to do with this?

No, very unlikely.
