USB Problem! Help me!
When i start my computer, the keyboard and mouse dont work when the computer gets to the xp logon, or lunix bootloader. it'll work in the bios and startup options of xp (F8 ones). It also works fine IN linux or windows 98. If i unplug the keyboard and mouse (and usb modem) until it reaches logon, it will work, but this is obviously annoying, and a hassle.
The matter is further complicated by the fact that i fixed it buy enabling "plug and play OS" in bios. However, that was while running a borrowed copy of xp pro, not my cdr one of xp pro corporate. with the current one, it makes no difference. anyone had this problem before, or have a suggestion. XP troubleshooters are shit, and no help at all.

Nobby Nobbs, you could be having a problem with the default USB drivers included in the XP version. Windows'98 & Linux require you to seperately install your keyboard/mouse/any peripheral drivers, which as you've said is working fine; whereas WindowsME & XP have their own default drivers to detect & install USB peripherals as soon as you plug them.

BUT if theyere left in at startup, tough shit, reconnecting them wont help, i MUST restart with them out... |

try this for your windows XP:
remove yoru password from your account and delete the other account. That way you bypass the logon screen. by what you've said so far, it should work then ever time like normal but if it doesn't then it's something wrong with the way you have your keyboard/mouse installed. No sig here folks. |

Never use USB for keyboards and mice. Get a USB-PS2 (mouse port and keybord port, not Playstation 2!) converter at Radio Shack or your local computer store.
This is a sig of some nature. |

You should've installed XP with "plug+play aware os" already enabled in bios.
This option should be enabled with all Windows 98/ME/2K/XP. Disabling it means the bios takes care of all irq's/resources. Enabling it afterwards will probably screw up all Windows irq/acpi/resource settings. |

i'll try that next time i fuck the system up, dj egg. i am sick to the teth of formatting this thing. every 30 days for the last 6 months. damn xp activation. As i said, i got a corporate version, so its staying the way it it until the system NEEDS a format.
oh well. i can put up with it until then, or for 6 months, then i get a new pc. my sister is keeping the old one because i fuck it up too often. i'll install 98 for her on it once the i have the new one. and i agree ps2 keyboard/mouse are better. thanks for the advice all! |

Me thinks back to a problem I had with USB and XPpro. I was getting a 'code 10' problem when ever I checked in Device Manager, as I couldn't get either of my usb ports to work. The fix was in bios. I had to disable the 'Legacy' option and that fixed it.
Seems that the drivers for the standard or legacy options are diferent but close enough in similarity tp cause generic driver install conflicts such as used in XP. Thats what I could make out on a problem similar to this any way. Anyway I disabled the 'LEGACY' option and every thing usb wise has been fine on that computer since. The Computer in question was my old AMD400mghz with MSI MB and I forget the BIOS name ...I'll edit if I remember ..(Which will probably be next time I re-boot as it has the same brand name of BIOS on my current machine, a P2-400mghz.. Don't know if that helps at all..... Music is Life, Love and Happiness :|: Life is Music. Serren - 1985 - 2005 Religion? If you're having nForce2 chipset mobo, the SP1 is a MUSt for the USB to work properly.
