M3U / PLS files

The problem is simple. I've tried making M3U files and PLS files in every which way.

making the list via winamp
downloading the list that comes from shoutcast.com and editing via notepad

I've check the sources on other sites like bassdrive.com It is ONLY a simple link
<a href="play.pls">play</a>

Yet when i access the m3u or PLS file on my site, in netscape, it comes up as text -- as if an "unsupported" file format. However, clicking a link of the same nature on bassdrive.com brings up winamp as it should.

What's the trick?
