server not connecting / souncard required?

I have tried to setup shoutcast on a machine.
The machine doesnt have a sound card.
Is a sound card required? Sorry for the dumb question but I could swear that I had a shoutcaat server running a few years back without one.
The shoutcast source says "not connected" Will all of this go away if I put a card in the machine?
